Default So - I'm after an engine - advice and suggestions please.

Hello,

I've got a project I'm building. Spaceframed, mid engined, and I'm considering engine options. The original plan had been to go transverse Saab B234R across the back axle. Strong, tunable, cheap. But now I'm having other ideas, and one of the more significant contenders is a Scoob engine.
  • Well established tuning road map
  • Comes ready packaged with a gearbox for a longitudinal/transaxle install (remove centre diff / prop-flange)
  • Is low and wide - better CofG and should fit nicely in the space available in the back of the car (other longitudinal options, eg LS1/G50, are too tall at the front)

But I know sod all about Subarus, aside from owning a NA Legacy a few years back.

Given I have the luxury of choice here, what are the better options, engine-wise, or is a 16V 2.0 much of a muchness (ancillaries aside). What about 2.5L?

Finally - I'd need to do a trial fit before committing to anything. Where can I get dimensions. What would be a suitable cheapo donor for getting the general fit - eg NA old 2WD?

The tightest bit is going to be the front end, where a low, wide flat 4 will tuck in nicely. The gearbox end of things should be less of an issue, provided the driveshafts line up with the hubs.

Ta!

I think the 2.0 would be the best option (cheaper and more plentiful) You can mate it up to a VW gearbox (RJES do the conversion parts) this will give you 2wd I guess.

Cheers.

Any reason to use a VW box instead of the Subaru unit? Would be looking to run biggish power, 300-400BHP. I'd assume that the Subaru box would be stronger.

I only recommended VW if you plan on going down the 2WD route. I dont know what would be involved in turning a Scooby gearbox into a 2WD only box. Cogbox and Rancho gearboxes do uprated VW boxes

Whatever you do, DO NOT get one off of "wrx willie" or "sonicvr6"!

Hi ClubVR4 expat

Sounds interesting but sorry can't help with an engine. I would also advise a
2 litre one and a 6 speed box if you're going for big power. Be careful where you buy.

Cheers

Hello MalcB Not quite an expat, more a duel citizenship. Still got the VR4 as a daily

6 Speed box would be nice, but I'd be on my own in the 2wd conversion, as there's no kit like there is for the 5 speed. That said, it's a track car, so 5 is plenty.

Is there much variation in the EJ20 lumps from different years and cars etc? There seem to be lots of different EJ20x where x is T, G, K, 5 etc Or are these just different arrangements of ancillaries, with the core block / heads / internals etc all being much the same?

EDIT: Answered my own question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine

I may look to start with an EJ20G from a Legacy - why? Emissions - if I can get a donor that pre-dates the requirement of a catalytic converter, then I'll not need to fit one on my project.
