It would be a big stretch to do it with the std turbo, you'd be looking for a TD05 16G or VF35. Then STI TMIC with sti bonnet vent and undertray, pink injectors, sportcat with decat up=pipe and second cat delete, and most importantly a brake upgrade! Oh, and a remap.

Someone add summat if Ive missed it.

Thanks Myles. Which turbo is better, the TD05 16G or the VF35? I remember looking for a VF35 when I was going to tune my old Octavia vRS but they were thin on the ground. Would a FMIC be a suitable option? I am guessing pink injectors are stock issue on one model? Would the fuel pump need upgrading?

Im getting the larger Brembo's would be required?

Are the engines capable of taking 300bhp without needing the internals upgrading?

Hi MJL, depending pm the condition/age of the engine, it should be ok for up to about 350ish BHP. But, at that point, if your gearbox is not in equally good condition, it wont take the power and break.

I have the same issue, I have tuned my wrx to about 320 bhp, the mapper says he can get more out of it, but could kill my gearbox. I'm saving for a 6 speed conversion now!

I have a vf34, pink injectors, sti top mount, 3" downpipe with 200cell sports cat, straight up pipe, 3" straight through exhaust and uprated fuel pump with re-map.

Thanks for your reply Reshard,

I wouldnt want to push it too much, but i think 215ish bhp from a UK spec is a bit light lol. What is a straight up pipe? are the Pink injectors from another Scoob?

Thanks.

Dependent on how well your engine has been treated, it will be fine at 300bhp. I think the 16G is harder wearing and repairable, the 35 is a throwaway item (as far as I have been told).
As for brakes, you can upgrade the 4 pots with better discs and pads, buy the 335mm upgrade for the 4 pots from Godspeed (I have that option), or buyone of the many complete kits (pads discs and calipers) by AP, K-Sport, Alcon, etc.

Agreed! Once you've modded it, the difference is amazing!

The up pipe has a cat on it, I bought an up pipe from here without the cat. Someone was selling a Harvey's up pipe which I snapped up.

The pink injectors come from the STI models and some others I believe.

I bought all the parts from here, either put up a wanted post, or keep an eye on the subaru parts section.

I got a lot of parts from Scott at scooby spares. He's a top bloke, can advise you on how to get to the power you want, and also sell you the parts. Give him a ring.

I've got the sti topmount but not the scoop and undertray. Currently at 315bhp so it is not 'stricly necessary' to break 300. However, having said that it would be much better to have these items and its something I will address over time. TBH part of me wishes I'd gone for a front mount, by the time you've bought intercooler, tray and scoop and maybe painted the scoop you've spent just as much!

Wish I went the front mount intercooler route instead of the STI top mount now.

FMIC makes for a better investment.

I think a front mount is overkill for the kind of power levels we are talking about, the STI TMIC is still very efficient at these levels. If you are looking to go plus 380-400, then yes, itll future proof your car.

Simple List for over 300bhp

Walbro 255 fuel pump for safe measure (bugeye pumps are over 10 yr old)
Pink Injectors from a newage STI, or injectors out of a Hawkeye WRX
STI Up-pipe from a newage car.
2.5" or 3" exhaust (decat or cat back)
vf35, 16g etc

Further tweaks to safe guard the above or future proof for more mods
STI TMIC
Under tray
Scoop maybe
Brake upgrade (Subaru 4 Pots are fine with the right disc and pad set up for 300+)

FWIW:
Front Mount not necceasary for up to 400bhp, unless tracking, and even if you are tracking as long as its not stop start you will be fine with the TMIC. Dont quote me but Im sure I have heard of folk running beyond 450bhp on a standard STI TMIC, and some running beyond 500bhp with a serious aftermarket TMIC (John Felstead maybe?)

I ran 413bhp with a STI TMIC before going FMIC due to track days.

Agree 100% front mount is not required for these levels. My point was purely that when you add up cost of intercooler, tray and scoop (plus painting) theres not a lot of difference (depending on choice of front mount).

TMIC 10min swap vs FMIC Half day plus.

Newage requires a lot of chopping of the bumper, and bumper bar if not supplied.

Ok, lets assume you have paid an extra £1500 on an STI over a WRX. Here is what you have got for your money:

STI Vs WRX

6 Speed box that will take brutality / 5 Speed box will not
Brembo Brakes with good pads/discs work well / 4 pots are fine, but are not future proof
STI engine semi forged, good for 450bhp / WRX is not
STI Variable valve timing / WRX is not
STI high redline / WRX will fail at those revs
STI Interior Stylish and hugging / WRX plain, but ok.
STI Exhausr no cat in up pipe / Cat is up pipe
STI TMIC good for 400bhp / WRX TMIC 300bhp
STI Injectors good for 400bhp / WRX are not
STI Scoop and tray / WRX you will replace
STI spolier looks the parts / WRX does not
STI Headlights are great / WRX is not
STI Supsension / WRX is not STI

you getting the picture?

Of course, however, how much is a decent usable STi going to cost? and I'd be leaving a WRX standard for a while until funds allowed..

What's your budget for the car?

.....and then how long before you have funds to carry out the required work to get it where you want it?

Id be looking for a Bugeye STI then mate.

There has been some amzing Bugeyes on here recently for very good money. Javelin was 5k, Lee was 5k and both were/are very good examples.

Without wanting to start a WRX V STI riot thread, if you havent had an Impreza yet then you will love either car, but once you start modding and waying things up you will always kick yourself for buying a WRX, those that say different are lying Of course thats unless thats how things have panned out, I mean take Jura's build for example You will not see a better WRX wagon imho.

You will struggle for £3.5k, but they do sometime crop up, I should know

I would say this day and age a decent STI Bugeye will cost anything from 4k which isnt a great deal over your budget if you take into account the better products it has.

Lets assume you go with a WRX, and want for more power and stopping:

STI pipe - £40 plus fitting
STI TMIC - £120+
STI Injectors - £100 plus fitting
STI Scoop and tray - £100+

So the above is what a STI has over a WRX that you would need on a WRX to get more power, so at over £400 in parts plus labour - lets assume £650 in total your already at £4'000 with WRX and above mods, and you will still only have a 5 Speed box and 4 pot calipers.

There are plenty other threads on here covering the difference between WRX and STI's. Dont get me wrong here, after owning several WRX's they are still great cars, but for those of us that like to tinker, the WRX's are full of parts that "need" to be changed to obtain and maintian reasonable power output

Good luck with your search, and if I can help further please feel free to PM or ring me

Rob

The Andy Forrest site has a nice little guide http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk/58901.html

As for buying a STI in the first place, if your like me, i didn't really have a choice as i wanted a bugeye wagon. (and i'm not waiting/paying for a wagon STI!!)
But i picked one up for £2400 with full sport cat exhaustand a VF28. Then got a Prodrive front end (bumper, wings, arch liners) and STI bonnet scoop and undertray for £400 in the same colour (Mica blue/black) as my car! A set of pink injectors for £130 etc. So it doesn't necassarily cost a lot to do! Plus i get the bits as and when i can afford and i reckon i'll still be chaper than an STI wagon when i'm done, but also crucially for me, different!
