Default Engine failure!!!

Unfortunately, its been confirmed today that cylinder 1 has no compression

But, I want to rebuild it properly upgrading as I do

Ive looked at the RGC 2.1 stroker kit, but wondered if that or the 2.5 or if a good rebuild with good parts on 2.0litre will do??
Im hoping for 350ish when done

First off, do you know what killed your present engine? Get that clear before making the same mistake twice

Second, you need to do PLENTY of research and ask some of the respected tuners on here for their advice: Allan Jeffery at Engine Tuner, David O'Brien at API, Harvey Smith, amongst others. PM is better than on here, as is e-mail.

Are you aware, for example, of the limitations of your present car? When I went 2.5 after an engine failure, I found out that firstly I REALLY ought to forge any 2.5, and secondly, the torque would quickly kill my then gearbox, so I needed to go straight cut, or go for a 6-speed tranmission.

All that came from the responsible professionals on here.

It's fun reading what others tell you, but beware: YOU will pay for any mistakes THEY make. Treat all advice with care.

Couldn't agree more with Alcazar.

You need to make sure the cause is identified and then choose an engine that suits YOUR needs. Based on my experience I'd suggest you have a word with David at APi for honest advice with no obligation. As Alcazar says though, ring around and get a few quotes.

One thing I would say is that under no circumstances should you try and do it on the cheap by taking the car to a non-subaru specialist.

My bugeye sti with it's CD Block is happi;y running at 440 bhp on the clinics rollers as the engine came out of the factory so sticking with 2.0 litre but a forged rebuild should be okay. The 2.1 route does sound nice though.
I am contemplating getting mine rebuilt and looking into the best route nAllan Jeffery at Engine Tuner has answered any question I have asked him very openly and quickly. i am put off the 2.5 route as you will be replacing the engine so a new engine number and would be easily picked up by the insurance ££ With the OE block you know nothing!! (Naughty though)

Thanks guys.
Ive been talking to mechanic and he rekons as long as we rebuild my 2.0litre properly, it will be cool. Im looking at stainless headers heat wrapped, up pipe and just renewing everything.
Although I do fancy the RGC stroker kit 2.1 ;-)

If you are sure you will be satisfied with 350bhp max then for cost effectiveness you would be best just forging your 2.0.

personal i'd look at a cheaper end 2.5 build. should make an awesome road car, might be the end for your gearbox, but aiming for 350 puts you in that range anyway

Yes David, if you read my post fully, I've advised him to contact the likes of yourself, (ARE there any others exactly like you?), by e-mail, or PM, not on here.

Oh dear: AGAIN I say, GET PROPER ADVICE!

The above advice isn't much use: why would you want stainless headers and a new up-pipe until you have done other mods? Or changed the turbo to suit? Or had them both MATCHED to your turbo? You could end up with less spool, or even, less power.

When people on here with large post counts point you at certain others on the forum for advice, it isn't to drum up trade for them. They don't NEED that.
It's because their "opinions" are useful, well thought out and trusted.
They are the people who will steer you right, NOT just dvise and walk away, or take your money and run.

350 is a strange figure, its at the top or reliability for most Semi forged engines, and just out of reach for many turbos, 330 better, then bite the bullet and go to 360+ much more expensive !!

i would get 2.1 built by api or alan jeffery if i was u. there been so many so called mechanics that have built engines and they blown within 1500 miles i think there must be an art to it lol. if u not going above 400 any newage sti shortblock perfect for u.
then just fit your heads alot cheaper mate

For 350 - which I agree is an odd figure but makes sense if you're protecting the gearbox just get a forged 2.0 or 2.1 in a SCDB, no need to go closed deck at that level.

Make sure you renew everything that's had oil in it!
Refurbish heads (even if you get a 2nd hand set this should be done)
Oil Modine Cooler
Sump
Oil Pickup
Water pump (well it's in bits isn't it?)
Oil Pump - uprated preferably
All oil lines (or get them well flushed/blown through)
Turbo (or get yours reconditioned)

I got lot's of advice from a range of people, Alan J (enginetuner) and David at APi included when my 2.0 wrx let go at 370BHP. I have gone down the 2.5 route as I was only aiming for mid 400's and ended up using Andy Williams (WMS) for my build which I've been happy with and has proved reliable. Remember that it's torque not power that kills gearboxes so any increase in displacement will shorten the life of your box!
