Default self diagnostic devices help please

i have a 1999 uk 2000 with a diagnostic port near the steering wheel.

at x mas i got a new water hoses after fitting them my (check engine ) light came on ..

car runs fine doesn,t miss a beat .i don,t no anyone near me to get it checked at mate rates so looking at getting my own diagnostic device on ebay but they all list 2001 onwards .

on my volvo that i sold a mate did a diagnostic on that but my car was a 98 and the device said 2000 on wards it still worked ..

peoples ideas please

my own diagnostic reader is 0BD2 (thats the connection type) is also the most common
this one is the same as mine....not used or even tried on the scoob yet
Subaru are OBD2 from 1996 onwards .....i have used mine on older makes of car as long as the OBD2 socket is there

the link below...if u look at the lower pic of the two cables the plug on the left side of the bottom cable is the OBD2 plug,this plugs into your car

the MS509 is a good basic scanner the link i posted is from a seller in hong kong thats why its cheap...lots of them in the uk also on ebay

this one will sort out the engine check light etc but if you want a scanner that does airbag lights etc....you need a differant model and more cash lol

thanks guys

i drove it to the m o t centre today and toped up with fuel after 4 min driving it went ,must of had some water on a senser when i changed to top rad pipe

still gonna get one as in the long run cheaper than taking it to a garage
