Default uk spec classic turbo rich idle backfire

hi peeps,

couple of questions u may be able to answer

the car is running really rich, backfireing in the intake wont idle and stalls and pops when you touch the accelerator.

i put a second hand knock sensor on it a couple of weeks ago as the CEL kept flashing up.

now it has code 22 and 23 for knock sensor and MAF. i put a second hand maf on as i found dry solder joints in the old sensor.

i reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery overnight as i couldnt keep the engine running to use the diagnostic connectors.

problem still persists

can a duff knock sensor cause these sorts of issues?

and has anyone else had similar problems? been searching google all day.

ive checked all hoses as the symptoms are the same as a plenum hose poping off. every now and them it will idle pefect for about 10 secs.

thanks
rich

If the exhaust tailpipe has build up of carbon then i would also say 02 sensor.

Could also be a coolant temp sensor.

If that's not working correctly it could be reading the coolant temp wrong - if the sensor thinks the car is 'cold' all the time it'll just throw fuel down it as if the car would be on-choke like the old days !

thanks for the replies guys. found a split hose between the turbo and maf at the turbo end. not a nice job if anyone else has replaced one. whole inlet manifold off. got a second hand one from jap performance parts in crawley. put all back together and still the same. ran an ecu reset again and tested second hand maf. all seems ok. tested 02 sensor and that was ok. checked pressure out of fuel filter and it was coming out like a watering can. so replaced fuel filter. still the same. then i get thinking surely the fuel should be coming out very quick as its a high pressure pump. so replaced the fuel pump and car is perfect. never known a fuel pump to still work but loose all pressure. oh well job done.

thanks anyway people.
