Default Cut out under acceleration leading to idle problem

had a problem today, filled up with petrol, accelerated away up the sliproad onto the dual carriageway, revs got to about 5,000 and the car spluttered, grabbed another gear and seemed ok.

so i reduced the boost to 0.5 bar and tried again, the car was still cutting around 5000 rpm. pulled over and switched off and on again. this time car pulled through cleanly but it's left me with a hunting idle, check out this video

anyway, got the car back home and checked for any loose connections. to me it sounded like an air leak so went over what i could see and nothing seemed amiss.

unplugged this

and the idle returned to fairly normal, not great but a lot better...

things that have changed:
the car used to pop and bang on overrun when slowing down, that's now gone, replaced with a smoother sound

when the car settled on idle there was an electronic ticking which i presumed was something to do with idle control and that no longer happens

then finally, the engine light came on, and the revs stuck high and pulsed. i've recorded another video below. it's a few mins long but please take a look

it's going into chevron tommorrow for a setup so i'll get them to plug it in but was looking for other peoples thoughts on what could be wrong.

What car/year/model, what fuel did you put in?

impreza wagon uk turbo2000, 1999, £30 shell vpower, although the last few fillups have been 95 octane due to local shell stopping doing it (no issues at all running 95ron before)

haven't run a diag on it, to be honest not sure how to do it, will search and see how to do it, although it's going in tomorrow to have the wheel alignment done at chevron in stafford so i'll get them to plug it in.

Interesting post as I'm suffering similar probs.

Certainly getting a rich mix hunting note to the engine combined with a coarse throttle response. Shut down, have coffee and now back to normal.

How much is a MAF and what code is logged?
