hi iv recently started to have idle peoblems, she used to purr at 1000rpms lovely, but now she drops and rises between 0 and 1000rpms and occasionally cuts out. Its worse when i am actully drivin when i put my clutch down she drops and cuts out straight away which is very dangerous.
The car is a 99 2000 turbo The car has been remapped and also has fmic

Sounds like the maf sensor needs replacing to me, know anyone local who has the same car you could borrow theirs to test it?

Mine had the same problem, it had a green performance panel filter in it that was wax based and it messed up my maf sensor, bought a new one and its run perfect since.

 

iv got a green hks mushroom filter, were abouts is the maf sensor and what sort of price did u pay mate

 

At the end of the hks mushroom filter you should see a black box with wires connected to it thats the maf, mine was for a newage subaru and i got it from importcarparts for £210 delivered original subaru part, subaru wanted £354 for the same part ;/

Be very careful until you find the problem as if it is the maf an you run any boost your engine could go pop as the fule & air mixture will be well out.

 

I had this as well.I changed the maf and it was fine after that.
It's located just after the air filter,there's a small wiring harness plugged in there.Pull the plug and you'll see there's 2 security torx screws to remove it.

I bought mine from an eBay shop selling genuine Subaru sensors new.It was £98 but I can't remember the name of the place.

yeah thats quite alot for a sensor and yeah i keep gettin a cheak engine light comin on for a few seconds then off wont let me boost up when its on but all be to do with the same thing thanks mate

Did I read somewhere that you can try cleaning the MAF sensor before going to the expense of replacing it?

Any idea what to clean it with? Because mine hunts a bit on idle sometimes, and stutters for a few secs sometimes when I'm driving along.

 

Get the latest OEM MY99/00 MAF from Import Car Parts. It was remanufactured after 2006 and has a green stripe painted on (rather than a green dot). It's allegedly more robust. Also, it's the whole thing i.e. sensor + MAF tube (I think).

Although that said, if you now buy a brand new MY99/00 MAF then, by default, it will be a "green stripe" one. As the older, pre-2006 "green dot" one, was discontinued.

And of course, you ARE aware that induction kits are MAF killers?

 

They're for the earlier cars.
This is the type for the 99 2000 model.

The earlier cars are more expensive because you have to buy the whole air flow meter,whereas the later models you can buy just the sensor.

 

this might be a long shot but do you have a dump valve and if so have you cleaned it up lately . i have had my dump valve on mine for just 5mths and my revs started to dip and rise on tick over ... took dv off cleaned it . job done stable revs now on tick over..

 

i have the open upper vent above my air filter wonderin if water has got into it ?

Bonnet Vents!

 

You need to put the vents back on, they are cosmetic only, opening them up does 2 things, dumps water onto your maf sensor and dumps water onto your fuse box, neither of which is a good idea (and it disrupts the airflow underbonnet making it less efficient and causing turbulence which may well cause issues with the airflow to the intercooler).

I would do the following:-
Put a standard airbox back on.
Replace the bonnet cover(s)
Replace the maf with a new one
Dont try cleaning the old maf, its knackered and they are fragile due to the element, dont even touch it if you can help it.
You may require a security torq screwdriver set as the correct screws are torq security ones.

but if my car has been mapped with the induction kit thats on wont putting the standard airbox back on mess anything up, and yeah got new maf from subaru £116 including vat defo going to block vent up asap

 

It might put it a bit rich, but better than lean and certainly better than keep killing the MAF?
