Is it only the heads that are the problem ?? Lots of heads from Bug WRX's about as quite a few being broken, no AVCS so usually pretty cheap too

hi shaun yes belive its just the heads as had slight miss, removed heads to find a good gasket and healthy looking pistons tipped some fuel down valves when closed and they leaked so had it checked at an engine shop and they confirmed this and want £350 to re condition both heads!
problem is the cost of gaskets and timing belt and tensioners water pump and all that goes with putting it back together, was just thinking would be easier and possibly cheaper to buy a complete engine and throw it in!

The problem with buying a second hand engine is that you don't know what's inside the block...... could last 100,000 miles could last 10 miles

Check out the price of bug heads from some of the breakers on here, can't imagine they are worth much, certainly less than a re-con you were quoted.....
