Default what engine

Hey all probably a stupid question but brand new to the subaru thing. I have a 1999 v reg classic wagon a uk model, unfortunatly it has lost compression in one cylinder and think the piston seals are leaking oil so needs a rebuild or new engine. My question is can i get any classic wagon engine as a replcement or is it just certain year engines that will slot straight in. Many thanks for any info on this subject in advance.

As long as it's an EJ20 then it will be fine. Ideally you will want the later version of this, 1998-2001. Careful of the changeover years.
