Hi folks

Just a quick question with regards to beams on classic headlights.

I know you can alter the level of the dipped beam on the headlights but can you alter the hi beam too?

Just put new bulbs in my crystal blacks and dipped beam is ok but when you flip them on to hi beam there all over the place

Not sure if its the same way on them but when u open the bonnet at the back of the headlights there is a 'twisty thing' (sorry don't know what its called). That should adjust the level.

 

Both beams use the same bulb, so you can only adjust one, and hope the other is OK.

Woops...........sorry to have to be the one to break the bad news but you have a problem with the new bulbs.

If you are lucky, they aren't seated right, and checking and seating them properly, the right way up, in the right place etc, will solve your problem.

But most likley you've fallen foul of the "higher spec/wattage is better" sales pitch for bulbs

Basically, the design of reflector lights requires the bulb filaments to be in EXACTLY the right place. Even a mm either way is NOT good enough, and will lead to scatter.......which is already awful in classic Subaru lights

Auto Express showed this a couple of years back, where, in a controlled test, STANDARD 60/55W, QUALITY headlight bulbs performed significantly better than so-called uprated, or higher wattage bulbs.

So.........try re-seating them. If that don't work, bin 'em or take 'em back and buy some decent ones. Osram Nightbreakers, Philips Vision Plus, Halfords uprated on BOGOF.........

But PLEASE don't expect anything even halfway decent from crap Subaru classic lights.

The ONLY way forward with those is a projector retrofit

 

Hi, as above really. I have osram night breakers on my classic and they are very bright

 

I did buy the higher wattage ones as had them before and they were great. These one though I managed to get for nowt in the end as the finish was crap. So not too bothered tbh and can always get others if need be. Shame cos the dipped beam isn't bad tbh lol

As far as normal headlight bulbs go, opt for either osram nightbreaker+ or philips extreme vision imho. Both are miles better than the std items and dont cost the earth. If you still cant see far enough up the road junk your fogs and get some driving lights with 100 130w bulbs.When you switch your main beam, on people get out of bed as they think dawn is breaking. lol

 

Or put HID driving lights on. Then, when you switch on main beam, people get UNDER their beds as they think the country is uinder nuclear attack.

 

Are the crystal headlights any better with the headlamp adjustment.

i thought they may offer better through the country lanes. as u can adjust the beam up a little.

 

You can adjust the beam in either, crystal or original.

But both suffer from poor optics, scattering most of the light.

You can uprate them with 90% or 100% uprated bulbs like Osram Nightbreakers, Philips Vision Plus, halfords 100% uprated etc, but they are still far from good.

Now..........put some decent driving lights where ther foglights are, and REALLY light up the countrty lanes

I have a pair of Hella driving lamps on mine I could do with a new lense in one as its cracked right across it But then there not wired up yet and were like it when I bought the car in June this year.
What H bulbs go in them? There are 2 bulbs in each lamp.

 

Those are brilliant little lights when working and, like ALL lights, properly aligned.

I assume they are halogens? They come in halogen and HID. They are, afaik, still available from Hella dealers, probably to order, but fitting is easy.

If they have two bulbs, one will be sidelights. They come in main, or dip beam, with or without sidelights and in Halogen or HID.

Assuming yours are halogen, main beam with sidelight, your part number will be:
1KO 008 191-007 They are NOT "handed", although their supports, under the covers, ARE.

The bulbs are H7.........if you need a new light unit, the sheet I got from Hella says they come WITH bulbs.

Get them working, they are great, you'll be able to SEE!

There are wires attached to the back of the lamps and I think there are wires coming from the back of headligh units that have a weird connector on them. I will get round to doing them at some stage, but when is the question lol

And yes I am pretty sure there Halogen ones.

 

They looked like halogens to me too.

I can advise on wiring if and when, it's an hour's job if you haven't done one before, but not difficult.

 

Ok will pick your brains if I get round to doing them and if I remember lol

 

Get them connected and working, you won't regret it if you do much driving on lanes etc after dark.
