hi people was driving my subaru wrx jdm turbo today as i pulled away hard went from first to second then heard a strange noise so stopped the car.
now when i start the car and leave it on tick over it sounds like a bag of nails is this my gearbox. when i push the clutch down it stops but i have also noticed now that i cant select any gears but last time my gearbox went it never made this noise just when i tryed to drive it you could hear it sounding like bag of bolts so before i go and buy another box i need to no if this is my gearbox.any help would be much appriciated kind regards ben

Drop the oil on the tranny & look for any metal. Sounds more like clutch related though.

sounds like springs from the clutch friction plate bouncing around the bellhousing

Can you get gears with the engine off?

dooby-do 30 October 2011 04:07 PM

nope no gears at all it seems to be just locked up i drained the oil out, there were quite a few on shards or metal on the drain plug but no chunks came out like normal when a gearbox goes.

Clutch bearing shattered or plate id guess

so just going to have to rip the gearbox of and take a look at how bad the damage is i guess

i have just noticed that since i have drained the oil i can now select gears

Sound like gearbox to me, draining the oil has probley moved all the swarf around.
Did you have the right oil, and the right amout in? If it was a clutch issue you should of been able to select gears with the engine off.
