Octane Boosters
Hi Everyone
I am sorry if this has be posted before.
I have a 57 hawkeye WRX that has been re-mapped to run on shell V-power, it has always been ran on this also, would it cause any problems it I added a bottle of millers octane to a tank of fuel to raise the octane rating???
Thank You

If it's been mapped well to V Power with a good margin for safety then octane booster should not be needed. Bear in mind that octane booster doesn't give you anymore power, in fact it makes the fuel less 'potent', so it is detrimental to the power of the car using it if it does not make use of the added octane.
Is there any particular reason that you want to add this to the fuel?

Hi Graham, no reason really. I had just got the car and while getting it serviced I purchased a couple of bottles of millers octane as I could recall my friend using it on his scooby a few years ago, so it's either use them of throw them away, if there not worth using or would damage the engine I will just put them in the bin!, please let me know what you think I should do !
Thanks
Thanks
Is it Millers Octane Plus? If so, it's been deleted from their range for a while now and replaced with EcoMax http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers...UTO_RETAIL.htm
Octane plus had a shelf life (confirmed by Millers to me some while ago) If indeed it is Octane Plus that you have, then it could be a year or two old and past it's best. There may be some benefit left in it, so use it up! It won't do harm.

Are you sure about this?
I have personally tested the effects of having additional DET protection, using octane boosters (not meth or anything serious like that, but normal bottle boosters) and saw absolutely zero negative power effects, when using the stipulated doses.
To make it clear, this was for a car mapped to just pump fuel.
I would always advocate that it makes good sense to use octane boosters, if you are using your car on track for instance. It adds that bit of extra protection, when you're hammering your car in harsh conditions.
Whilst I agree it is not needed, but it can help.
Masswithclass,
I have tested Wynns Octane Booster and it works really well..... enough that it sucked up 3degs of ignition with no correction (using it at maximum strength). A bottle costs £5 and can treat a maximum of 60ltrs (perfect for a bit of extra safety without remapping) and maximum useage is two bottles to 60ltrs (if you actually wanted to use it for increased power associated to a specific map imo).

I think what Graham is saying is that a car mapped on V power etc alone is done with a specific amount of fuel to air ratio. By adding octane booster you are substituting a small amount of the petrol with the added octane booster. Effectively weakening the mixture (very few things have the power to weight ratio of petrol). If your car is mapped on the edge this may cause issues.
NF Race is a popular brand and although seemingly expensive, it's concentrated, so using the 'everyday' proportion of 1mL per litre (1:1000) it actually works out pretty cheap.
