Please help me- oil pump priming!?
Hi everyone.
Before everyone begins with the 'use the search' comments. I tried but unfortunately my iPhone crashes everytime I try!
I've just rebuilt my my99 and can't seem to get the new pump to circulate oil (crank sensor Is disconnected don't worry). I've filled the filter but still nothing.
Please please help me I really need some suggestions as I'm stuck 20miles from home!
Thanks
Matt

Maybe silly question mate, but have you changed the pump feeds?
Are they solid?
Also well known failure is the oil pump.
Hope this helps sorry cant help more

Thanks for the replies. I've Got a new 'modified' pump on it. What do you mean by oil feeds mate, pickup and modine pipes?
I've cranked it for two 10-15 second bursts as a little worried about mains/ big end bearings drying to much! Just wondered if there's a knack or is it just a case of cranking for x ammount of time?
Thanks

Yes mate
But i assume you replaced these with the new pump
Have you checked that the 'modified' part of it isnt causing the problem.
Did you use this pump before the rebuild.
I had loads of stress with mine, and in the end the oil pick up was f&^t,killed the crank.
Be really careful with cranking mate.
Hope this helps mate.

I did the rebuild mate. I bought the pump from Graham Goode racing. Is it usually just a case of cranking the oil up or have I got to prime more than just the filter?
I'm new to boxer engines, usually on 4 pot vauxhall engines cranking with turbo feed disconnected is enough?

The pickup pipe has been replaced with a genuine beauty. Nah the pumps new, I think the modified part is just pressure relief side of things. That's what I'm worried about mate, really can't afford a new crank!

If there isnt oil in the pump mate, try and get some into it through the feed, and the filter, and possibly risk a quick crank to see if it changes things.
Tell me about new crank **** mine is ballsed now , f(*king 200 odd quid, i could have a serious night out with that instead. Lol
Just take it easy with her mate.
Sorry i cant help more dude, not a pro.
Nice one

Cheers mate I'll give it a go in a few, just waiting for a call from Graham Goode racing who should be able to give me some insight lol.
Just spent 800 nuggets rebuilding this old girl! Oil pump gave up on my last bottom end and killed the crank to.,... Badtimes! Hense my paranoia and reluctance to crank! I'll update when I've spoken to suppliers and I'll try getting some oil into pump manually as suggested.

As it's a freshly re-built engine I assume you used an assembly lube on all bearings, cam lobes etc? if so, there shouldn't be a problem. Removing the plugs will reduce the load on the bearings and allow a faster starter. Make sure your battery is well charged!

Honestly take that pump out mate and get a pump that as been tested by many people here you will pay more but something that you can trust, i have not heard anybody that has used Graham Goodes pump on the engine rebuild here everyone prefer to spend a little more and get trusted supplier. But its your choice mate.

Graham Goode are a serious operation. There won't be anything wrong with their pump.
We would pre-fill the pump before it went on. It may be that the pump is dry [ or nearly dry ] and is having trouble priming.
OR; you might have a damaged oil pick up pipe or gasket that is drawing air rather than oil
Don't keep cranking *****-nilly, start working towards making sure that all is OK with the assembly before condemning any parts or suppliers.

I read on 22b.com about this exact problem yesterday.
Suggestion was to remove filter and crank it and make sure oil is coming out of the pump, then refit filter and crank again.
Reason for lack of pressure was given as an airlock between pump and filter, which can't be "cranked out" if the filter is filled

I sorted it in the end. I undid the right bung on the underside of the pump and checked that it was getting oil from the sump. I then undid the the left bung (high pressure, filter side of the pump) where there was no oil, this oviously meant the pump was airlocked. I then replaced the left hand bung and inserted a piece of hosepipe hard up into the right side (as far as it would go thus blocking the low pressure port to the oil pickup, this meant the oil would only be able to get drawn from the hosepipe) i then held the pipe up thru past the cam cover and filled with a litre of oil. Then, with someone cranking, i blew the oil thru the hosepipe up the pump to force the oil through pump and which over- came the airlock and got the pump sucking. then replaced bung and oil pressure came straight up because the filter was already full. Bodgey i know but it was the best thing i could come up with lol. Cheers for the help guys.

Leaving the oil filter loose while cranking is a messy but effective way to bleed air out of the pump. This is a common problem on a new build or when replacing an oil pump.

It's such a bloody worry when the oil pressure wont rise on an engine.... Especially when its my own! I did try the loosening filter trick before I started this thread to be honest, the problem was that the pump mechanism itself didn't have any oil worked into it so didn't have enough pressure to suck it through the pump. Forcing the oil uphill into the mechanism was just enough to get the little ******* sucking!
Oh yeah I had the left hand bung on the pump removed when I did the oil blowing (just for any future readers in a similar predicament to I was!).
Biggest pain in the **** was not having a 12mm Allen key to remove the binge on pump, had to get a 12mm a/f bolt from the intercooler and lock 2 m8 nuts off and seam weld the nuts to the bolt, therefore fashioning a 12mm Allen key to fit into a13mm deep socket lol.... Again for future stuck readers lol. Cheers
