Default loss of power and bad tapping

hello i was driving down the motorway giving it a bit of welly and the rpm meter just stayed at 5k revs and then lost power completely so i pulled over in the garage put some more petrol in as it was a little low went to start it and after trying to start for about 5 seconds it started then as i reved to pull to a safer place like 50 yards to a hotel car park where the AA would come and have a look he reckons its a hydraulic valve on the drivers side of the engine took it to a garage and now they are having a look does anybody know if this is a major job or just a tricky one and what sort of price should i be looking at paying

cheers for the help

How low was the petrol? There's the possibility you could have suffered from fuel surge which has resulted in engined damage.

I forgot to breathe in before I started, and passed out!

AA man didn't know your engine does not have hydraulic valve lifters!

JohnD

PS At 5k in top, you must have been doing 120ish?

The initial compression/leak down test probably wont cost all that much, dependent on what the find thats when you start talking serious money
