Do you have a MY99/00?

I have a perfectly working MY99 MAF (off my STi 5) for sale. It's the later manufactured "post 2006/green stripe" one - better made/more reliable.

its a 1999 uk model, standard, and ill,,lol i do need one, will yours fit straight in?

 

Ahhh, good question. I'm sure it'll fit (90mm outer diameter at turbo intake end).... But not sure if the sensor/calibration is the same for a UK car, compared to the JDM STi 5?

We'll have to wait for someone who knows to post up......

Yes it will fit straight in ,no difference in maf sensors as same part no for V5/6 sti or UK 99/00.A brand new one will cost you £100 - £130,2nd hand they can be anything from £30 to £50,but ocasional bargains do come up .

what makes you think your current one is faulty then?

 

there is a dead easy way to reset ECU, but its time consuming...

Just disconect the battery, and leave it all disconnected for a couple of days. the ECU internal power capacitor will completely discharge, and its memory will be wiped.

 

after reading all information about why my car is behaving the way it is, leads me to believe its the maf?? if u have any other suggestions feel free to offer it up? thanks men..

 

so what exactly is your car doing? hesitating around 2.5-3k rpm on part throttle?

 

constant fluctuating idle, and when u put your foot down hard in each gear it coughs and splutters and dont really get going, i have taken out the maf sensor and attempted to clean it, when i put it back it was worse, leads me to think ive messed it up even if it wasnt broke?

 

aye you cant clean them well you can attempt to but sometimes works sometimes doesnt. what did you attempt to clean it with? carb cleaner?

 

yeah carb/brake cleaner, actually made it worse, got new maf coming in post tomorrow, so fingers crossed!! i've disconnected battery on scoob, as someone said after a couple of days this would reset the ecu? we'll see!!

 

If brake/carb cleaner made it worse then your maf was on its way out anyway imho.The maf fails due to a build up of crap when it comes through your air filter and builds up on the element(wire).Carb cleaner will reduce some of the gunk,which you can also see if you look at the gauze on your maf ,which is usually black.Once it has been cleaned with brake cleaner you will see that the gauze is actually silver.I have used brake cleaner on 3 mafs for 99/00 cars and not had a problem with any of them up to now.

 

Not quite sure how that works : Resetting the ecu

1. Join black & green connectors together under steering column (20 secs),longer if they are taped up (5 mins)
2. Arm & disarm alarm ,Switch ignition on car,but do not start,check engine light will flash (20 sec)
3. Press accelerator to the floor,then bring to half throttle position & hold for 2 seconds ,then release. (20 secs)
4. Start up engine,and drive car around normally without over revving till engine is warm.(15 mins)
5. The check engine light will come on anything from 5 mins to 15 minutes later,and you are looking for it to flash at a steady one second intervals which indicates no faults and system is running ok.
6.Any faults will flash up with long flashes counting as 10 ,& short flashes as one.
Dead easy really and i do this once a month when i remember and it normally takes 20 mins tops .

The beauty over this method opposed to disconnecting the battery is that sensors such as lambda & maf sensors wont always show up when you disconnect the battery. Using the method above they will ,maf flashing up 23,and lambda flashing up a 32.

Always a bit of 'anxiety' on running issues like this. As it could have been a number of things.

But fair play to you for correctly diagnosing your issue. Glad I could have been some help (very rewarding to see my extraneous MAF go to a good home and help someone out).

...BTW, did you make sure you removed all the bubble wrap from the MAF tube before fitting?!!!

 

might be worth investing in a set of new plugs aswell?....just for peace of mind eh joz?
