A lot of Subaru owners do the top mount swap. I guess because it's larger, it will make a difference. Pointless just changing the intercooler without doing other mods, once you've done a few mods a remap is definitely worth doing

people usually upgrade the top mount and turbo together, very little benifit in doing the IC on it's own as the standard unit copes well enough with the td04 turbo.

Iff you could stretch to a better turbo as well as Sti top mount you would gain quite a few horses once remapped.

Changing from WRX to STI top mount will not add power by itself. No real point unless your changing the turbo too and going over 300bhp.

Don’t need a remap to swap the intercoolers. But will need one if your fitting fuel pump, or turbo or other bits too.

p.s. make sure you also fit the STI scoop under tray otherwise you will be worse off than standard WRX intercooler.

No point having large STI intercooler with tiny WRX undertray.

the benifits of the larger intercooler would still be there even with the smaller scoop/undertray, much the same as with the larger aftermarket intercoolers such as Hyperflow under the sti scoop undertray. Not fully but still worth doing.

Running a wrx undertray on an sti scoop would be worse than sticking with the standard wrx intercooler and undertray. If the undertray can not feed air to all of the intercooler then you will get hot spots (heat soak) and worse/reduced performance.

I had a massive hyperflow intercooler with sti undertray on my wrx which is fine as the surface area was the same, the hyperflow was just thicker. But fitting an sti or hyperflow intercooler with a tiny wrx undertray is a bad idea. Besides the sti undertray has a fin and secondary duct to force air to more surface area.

For the sake of £50 and a fleabay sti undertray its well worth fitting.

I have pics somewhere showing the difference in size, will see if i can get some posted.

ok brilliant so would it benifit me more just to buy a wrx intercooler as theres one on ebay saying it can increase bhp upto 30bhp and it would save the hassle of putting an sti one on it ill have a look for the link on ebay and try n post it see what u think as im new to this subaru stuff and very gullable lol :-/

Probably not. Some of the cheap eBay ones may flow worse than your standard wrx one. There are some really bad flowing cores in the cheap ones.

I'd still go sti, but get the undertray too or stick to standard wrx unless you doing turbo upgrade.

we are talking about the 2litre and it would need the sti scoop to fit the undertray, so not just £50. I ran a VF34, AVO TMIC which is equal to an sti tmic, successfully for quite a while before eventually upgrading my wrx scoop/ undertray. I didn't find any noticable benifits either on the road or RR. But then I was around 320/330hp. Much more of an issue now at higher power.
The hyperflow is some 30% bigger than the sti tmic.

I ran my bug WRX with an STI TMIC at 325 BHP (TD05 turbo and mods) with the WRX scoop and splitter.....the STi has better cooling and less pressure drop... despite what has been posted

......."bring the BHP up without a re-map" is difficult as the DENSO ECU just goes on it's merry way if you change anything LOL
