Just to rule this out...

Is your speedo working i.e. the needle isn't stuck at the bottom? This will prevent the car going over 4,500rpm - due to a shagged vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox

Could be lots of things...

Try checking the plugs, HT leads, coilpack, fuel filter, injectors etc to make sure nothing is bad or clogged

Could be the crankshaft sensor though with what you are describing

I'm sure someone will come along with more advice soon!

Hi, just reading your missfiring problem. My 1993 WRXRA is doing the same, poping and not reving over 4000. My Speedo stopped working a few days ago. What is normally the problem. You said it could be the vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox. Where is it on the gearbox and what does it look like. Thanks , Alistair.
( I have been under the bonnet for the last few hours checking and cleaning )

Best bet is to download the free firmware, RomRaider:-

RomRaider 0.5.3b - Open Source ECU Tuning

^^^ That site tells you all you need to know, etc.

...And the appropriate lead - the Tactrix OpenPort v2.0 - to hook the computer to the car's OBDII port.
