Sounds similar to what i have which everyone kindly identified for me, the left hand side rocker gasket leaking, the dripping oil burns on the exhaust heatshield.

My last scooby did exactly this, it turned out to be the front crank case seal. Cost about £80 done by subaru. The oil drips straight onto the exhaust manifold hence why it smells when it warms up, it really stinks doesn't it lol

Providing its not losing alot of oil, you make sure the oil stays topped up and its definately the rocker gasket it should be fine if you can put up with the burning oil and smoke.

My forester had a weepy camshaft oil seal that was about the same, annoying but not enough to lose any significant oil.
