Default Big end bearings gone again!

I have a 98 wrx sti type r which is running around 320 bhp, 2 months ago the big end bearings went on the car (it had done 68 thousand miles)

I bought another reconnned sti engine which had done 50 thousand miles. I've had it in the car for 6 weeks now and managed to rack up around 700 miles running it in.
Last night whilst driving, that familiar knocking noise returned and after a minute the car was undriveable!
Why has this happened to me twice in 2 months?!?!

Any answers or solutions would be greatly appreciated as once again it needs fixing.

Also, what should I do in the future to avoid this problem from re-occuring??

hate to say it but i would have told you so. a second hand engine is just that, alot of claimed 'reconed' engines just get jetwashed. rebuild by a reputable specialist is by far the best solution.

but on that note what exactly was done? did the oil pump get changed the first time? who 'reconned the engine' how do you know it had done 50k? etc etc etc

More like "conned", but im going to hazzard a guess at SMR/Ideal/Heathrow engines....

OP, its 99.9% best to rebuild with a tried and tested builder, or else you end up paying twice for what you should have done the first time, and you may find that the engine is out of warranty now...

Well I didnt source the engine, but a place called jap auto parts I think. Im not sure if the oil pump got changed, I did ask the place that done it to make sure that it was checked and if it needed to be replaced then to do it. I would of thought the engine would of gone alot sooner tho if it was the oil pump. I use super unleaded, I wouldnt use the normal stuff. I knew I should of gotten it rebuilt the first time but where the previous owner had paid half towards it due to it happening a day after I got the car he wouldnt budge on paying more than he should of for it to get done properly. Fortunatley I still have a month of warrantee left on the engine...

Unfortunately, you'll probably find that warranty won't be worth the paper it's written on!

You could do a lot worse than Speak to David at APi about your options now -you might want to get the engine indpendently stripped and a report on its condition produced which would help with any claim. Rebuilding a subaru engine properly, so it wil perform well and last, costs; that's all there is to it I'm afraid!

Best of luck getting it sorted!

Don't buy 'unknown' reconditioned engines. As some one said the "I told you so" line gets trotted about. Unless you were in the car the engine came from for all those 50,000 (alleged) miles, you don't know how it's been treated, run on wrong fuel, not mapped for mods etc.

Honest advice? Pay a reputable specialists to build your engine next time, even if just to a standard specification

Also, when you do replace your engine, do an A/F ratio check to make sure that a failing MAF sensor or fuel pump will not hasten the death of the next engine.

depends on spec, your into teritory where its what budget do you wanna spend, basic your prob talking 2-3k, then upwards depending on what you wanna do and also what damage your current engine has. if the blocks toast then your stuffed.

give scoobyclinic or API a ring, they will be able to advise

sorry to drag this up, but just a heads up to other people.

I took jap auto parts to court over a replacement engine and won (easily!!!).

Since then I have had several emails from people who have have been ripped off by them. Shame trading standards seem to be blind to this sort of thing!

They supplied a 'recon engine' (it wasn't) refunded us the full amount and paid for our and our mechanics time.

It was a joke in small claims, the first thing the judge asked was "did you test the engine", their reply was no, that was pretty much it.

I have phone records for endless calls where they fobbed us off or simply put down the phone. I came close to driving up to Birmingham, but settled for making them drive down to Poole, then paying us for turning up
