Scratching windows

It started with the driver's door, with one scratch at the top of the window. Now there are 3 scratches and they're also on the front passenger door, and the rear offside door.
(sorry about the crap quality of the photo, but it was dark when I took it and the autofocus couldn't function properly.)
I can only assume that they're caused by the small "stays" inside the door that routes the window to its staying point when shut. Maybe some dust / grit is in there and the friction is causing the glass to scratch?
Anyone experienced this before by any chance? What do you reckon my best method of counter-attack would be? I'd like to try and clean the small stays - but how?
I eventually intend to replace the glass, however I don't want to do this until I can prevent it happening again.
Can anyone please help me?
Many thanks in advance.

BuRR,
What MY is it and are you still under warranty?
Mine (MY99) are pretty badly scratched, so I asked the Dealer about it at the last service. Apparently it's a known problem and you should get'em replaced if you car's under warranty.
I'm getting mine replaced in a few weeks time.

Yeah - but what's the cause of the problem? I don't want to get autoglass to replace the glass then get it scratched straight away Did they tell you by any chance?

hi guys, inside the doors theres a brush on window runners, this picks up dust, grit etc which causes the scratching.
you can remove the scratches with jewlers rouge, its like a rubbing compound, available from smaller independant jewlers.
hope this helps, Dug.

I've used jeweller's rouge on our double glazing as we keep finding tiny little scratches after they were installed and got fed up of bothering the company. It works for small, fine scratches.
It does work on car glass. Patience is a virtue with this stuff
I think it's just Iron (III) Oxide, but some places sell an aluminium oxide as jeweller's rouge. Basically, it's a very fine abrasive.

I had the same problem but magnified. It sterted as you described but then the window started to move in its guides in the wrong way till the glass just went off them. I removed the door panel and I discovered that one small fastner had loosen. Than a second one , then a third one. The scratches are due to the window not staying perfectly inside the weak guides( being without the arch on top as the majority of other cars).

I'm having my drivers replaced under warranty tomorrow - the passengers do is not as bad and the dealer wouldnt entertain swapping it under warranty.
In my view its still scratched and should be done - maybe I'll try another dealer.
I tried a pic, but all you get is a reflection!

I think that somebody like Autoglass should be able to polish these out for you. After they have repaired a chip in a windscreen they polish everything up with a very small buff and some compound so scratches should be easy provided that they aren't too deep.

Same problem, had the o/s replaced under warranty about 9 months ago...now its scratched again and so is the n/s
Booked in for replacement next week...I hope they change the brushes!!!
MY99, still under warranty, just.
Good luck all you "scratchers"
Cheers MD.

Got a company coming tomorrow who specialise in polishing out windscreen scratches, so they say. Best thing is, it ain't gonna cost me a penny for them to try!!!! The windscreen clause in my insurance is helping me out, and it won't cost me anything as the work is classed as a repair, and not a replacement!
