Default Rocker cover leak repair - new gasket or sealant only?

Driver's side needs repairing on my Wagon...

When down at APi a while ago they repaired the nearside gasket. I seem to remember David telling me they reuse the old gasket and then use a good sealer (ThreeBond) on reassembly, as it's not the gasket that's the problem

I'm not trying to skimp on a gasket set, but the APi repair has never leaked yet in 2 years

Anyone shed any light?

Cheers

Tbh you won't know unless you open it up and have a look. For the sake of the complete kit @£40 a side I'd do the lot Got to do the drivers side on my wagon and I'll be replacing the lot

When I first bought my car I had a leak on the drivers side. I didn't know of any sealants etc, so just bought the full gasket kit, fitted it, and all has been well since.

When I had a rebuild and gen Subaru rocker gaskets were used it sprung a leak after a couple of hundred miles. I suspect alot of that was down to fitting though

APi also said (IIRC) folk tend to overtighten to compensate which messes things up too

I'd just buy the gasket set for the sake of it.

You could also check to see how level the parts are. Make sure they haven't warped over time.

For sure, I've ordered the parts this morning and have some threebond

Any fitting tips? I've heard putting washers under the stepped cover bolts pulls the cover tighter...?

Indeed you can, however if you do be very careful not to over-tighten cos there very easy to knacker the thread on these.

sorry to hijack slightly, but about to do mine.

Is it worth buying the complete kit,as in rocker gasket, bolt seals and the plug seals,or just the rocker gasket.

Also, this threebond stuff is like £28 !!! surely its just a silicone sealant/gasket sealant like the other £4 ones out there ??????

surely you dont have to spend,£70 on genuine gaskets to then use a gunk load of sealant ?

cheers
