Default knocking Noise...

Iv got a 2000 Impreza Sport Special and have noticed a knocking noise when Im turning the wheel. It doesn't happen on short journeys, only after a motorway drive or a long distance journey.

It doesn't happen in straight lines, only slow speeds when turning the wheel??

Any ideas guys? Poss diff??

Thanks, Stu

Nah, it's both directions but only when the car has been driven for a while. I think it may be the diff but not 100%.

Just wondered if anyone has had the same problem in the past

Sounds like the front wheel bearings to me, mine made funny noises when i turned corners, turned out to be NSR wheel bearing !

I'm sure some more technically minded guys will have there say on here!!

I had the same problem on a sport wagon replaced the bearing job done. Not saying its your probs check your CV joints if they ok its most likely the bearings

Its more of a thump thump thump then a whine though, and only after iv been driving about 15 - 20 miles? If it was a bearing would it not be constant from the min I set off?

i'm having a weird noise on & off very similar at low speeds & especially when turning. I am getting a loud clunking noise from the front drivers side (im sure its that area) & this morning it started clunking loads & then the clunking stopped & now sounds like something is spinning in time with the engine but not connected & making a noise like an empty brake pad on the disc noise.

need to look at the cv, hub, driveshaft & drive shaft locking nut. The locking nut can look tight but they can come loose & sit back in place from what i have searched on here.....

Yeah, it's just strange how it only happens after about 20miles or so, never on short trips :-/

if the bearin has dried out then after a short journey you will start to hear it humming, the best way to check this is to jack the car up ( from lets say the drivers side front ), then grab the wheel top and bottom and wobble ( like a push and pull motion )< if you feel movement then thats ya baby if not make sure its out of gear and hand brake on and spin the wheel listening for a grumbling noise from the center of the wheel, sometimes the've not gone far enough to feel play but you can hear the dry bearing, hope this helps jays
