Default General show and shine advice please

Hi guys,
Spent 2 hours under the bonnet with a toothbrush and have only scratched the surface! The engine degreaser I'm using appears to have little effect on the blackening of the engine bay when it comes to paintwork (although it does a good job on hoses and leads) and wondered if anyone knew a product that would do the job.
In the same vein does anyone know what paint I require to re-paint the 'red-top' section of my engine?
I have a Jap import Scoob with a 'waxoyled' underneath that has been damaged, are the Imports protected in this way or is it a finish someone has applied post import? Any advice on what product is best for patching up areas that have been scuffed away/damaged?
Rgds
