Default excessive oil consumption

Hi all,

My 2006 WRX has started to use irregular amounts of oil! The car is un-modified bar the ppp. Its not knocking or making any strange sounds as of yet and it doesn't seem to be down on power.

I'm unsure as to what may be wrong with it. Any suggestions would be great!

thanks in advance

I would be hinting at Piston/ Ringland fracture. simple compression test would soon indicate an issue

I wouldnt call that acceptable even on a forged engine. Mine has used 200ml in the last 4000 miles and is a forged ej257

@Sunny1989
I would take a guess at broken ring lands as that was the cause of my failure also check your breathers are ok

I reckon on the 2.5, a good healthy 2.0 would use little or nothing between changes

Newage if I recall. They send out black info sheets with the new cars to tell the owners to check the oil more frequent.

My forged engine doesnt even use that much be lucky if its 1/2 a ltr in 3000 miles

No doubting the 2.5 will use oil

200ml is less than a 1/4 of a litre like its not bad at all

It must have covered 350 miles max and has been filled up completely twice. went to investigate yesterday and there was hardly anything in it, its just sat in the garage in the mean time!

I'll investigate further and get some testing done this week. Hopefully its not too costly!

Only problem is i'm not sure if there are any Subaru specialists left around in the York area. RE motorsport et samurai performance etc have gone under. Does anyone know of any specialists close to York? all the main dealers have ceased trading too!

cheers for the help guys

Thats a classic case of ring-land fracture symptoms mate if your lucky it wont have damaged the bores but judging by the consumption you have reported I think it's too late

If it never did before and does now as others have said, then probable ringland failure.

My all singing and dancing forged lump has drunk oil since the day it was built. It works fine, sounds great on full chat, is brutaly quick. It just drinks the stuff when I use the car hard. It is just what it does.

Some do, some dont. A big noticeable change in the amount of oil an engine uses is more of a worry.

its exactly that thats worrying me, the change in consumption. This car has always used more than my other Impreza's but the recent hike in consumption is worrying. Especially when the car hasn't been pushed hard at all..

I'm going to monitor the change closely over the next four days even though its only going to be used in essential travel, till I can get a compression test done on Friday. Hopefully the news is well otherwise she will have to go , the costs of a rebuild just can't be justified at the moment!!
