Default MY01 JDM STi info please

Hi guys, I'm looking at buying a 2001 JDM EJ20 STi engine for my buggy, what I am after is some details about the spec of of this engine, is there any problems with using it? Are the parts pretty much the same as EDM motor? Anything I should watch for? Also are there any ECU pinouts available in English for the JDM cars?

Any help is appreciated, Ian.

They are higher revving than the edm car, 8200rpm, runs a different turbocharger, depends what the engine came out of but chances are its running a vf30.

Why are you changing your engine? It may be a better option to do something with yours and change the turbo, re-map etc, what are you trying to achieve and whats your budget?

Basically my bottom end is toast so at least I need a replacement, the engine is a 1998 UK turbo and as such I'm pretty limited on tuning due to the not being able to re map the ecu.
Going down the STi route was always my initial plan for the buggy this engine will be in too.

Bugeye JDM STi launched Nov after the WRX which is unusual as Subaru usually have a big launch of the WRX/ STi at the same time. Original Bug STi had AVCS on both inlet and exhaust which the Jap WRX didn't have both (single AVCS for the WRX).......

As long as you don't want to run any sort of AVCS and if you have a bug WRX and want to keep the TGV's then the Jap short motor will just slot in.

You can remap a 2001 ecu, I would build a decent short engine, fit a vf 35, re-map and see a nice 320-340 for reasonable money, £3K supplied, fitted and mapped.

Thanks for the input guys just to be clear the engine isn't going in a scoob it's going in this

The engine I originally put in the buggy was from a 98 UK turbo car , this engine has recently spun a bearing causing lots of damage see here . Now the options are to either rebuild with a cheap second hand short block to get me going but doing so I have no scope for tuneability due my ecu being in mappable or I get myself a complete STi engine, loom and ecu and re do it all. This is my reason behind the questions about the JDM motor as I have seen one on here for a reasonable figure but am I likely to get any bearing failure on another engine that is my conundrum

Help please

Cheers Ian.

Newage motors are way thougher, mine has been running over 2 bar of boost for ages.

P.S. UK STI has AVCS, JDM WRX has AVCS, UK WRX doesn't, only much later STI's have dual AVCS

Big end failure is common on all engines, more power = reduced big end life std wrx (uk) cars will do 100,000 miles and more but imports and sti's rarely last past 70,000. There are exeptions of course but thats what I see on a day to day basis. Spend cheap, spend twice!
