Default Idle problem and "check engine" warning light ????

People

I have a 93 wrx.

Yesterday it started playing silly fukka's with me. For some reason the idle revs went from its normal 1000rpm and jumped to 2000rpm when i stopped at some lights!! Then she started reving up and back down itself between 1500rpm up to 2500rpm (probably 1-2 secs between them both)

(hope i explained that so you understand)

The "CHECK ENGINE" warning light also came on (little bit vague as to the problem!!!!)

I left it over night and when i got in her earlier she seemed ok (no "CHECK ENGINE" light) for the first few miles... but after maybe 5 miles it started doing the same again.. and the light has come back on....

Any ideas ? I'm thinking maybe airflow meter ?? Maybe ecu ?? I'm not that technical with these cars... but i aint stupid

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

check your fault codes mate mine was doing same and i had 24 and 31 witch are both to do with the idle control valve on the right hand side of your inlet manifold remove it and give it a good clean if that doesnt work there is 2 screws on the top holding the bit that the plug goes on, unscrew them(mark where it is first) and move it slightly then try rev it and see what it goes and idles at, it took me a while but cured my problem

Ive plugged in the black and green connectors to run a check to find fault.

But the check engine light just stays on constant and doesnt flash. The relays and fan are clicking and working when the ingition is on so its obviosly running the check.

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks for your help

24 is icv (idle control valve) if you look at your inlet manifold on the right you will see a block bolted to the back of it with a plug at the top, first off loosen your screws off abit on the top where the plug is (you will see when you look at it) and twist slightly keep adjusting like this until it is idling smooth, when you set it just rev it abit and make sure it goes back to idling fine, it may take a while, failing that remove the whole thing from the manifold and clean out with carb cleaner or equivelant.

33 is vehicle speed sensor i dont realy know what to do about this someone else may be able to help but i dont think this is your problem. hope that helps

Clean the idle control valve as said above. Remove the top cover that is held on with two screws and remove all corrosion within. If you've got some WD40, remove the air hose that goes to the body of the idle control valve, start the engine and spray the WD40 in. You will have to play around with the idle control spindle (you'll see it once the grayish top is off) to keep the engine from going off and keep spraying for about 15 seconds.

The issue you got happens when the idle control valve gets stuck due to dirt within it. With the ECU unable to maintain idle, the engine will go off if the idle valve is stuck closed. If the idle valve is stuck open, the ECU periodically shuts off one cylinder (only at idle) giving you a lovely lumpy idle.
