Default Hill Start Clutch!

Hey All,

So just bought my second Scooby and when i test drove this one (MY01 Bugeye WRX) i notice when i lifted the clutch approx half way up, at the lights (on a hill) the car held its self with no revs applied!

I was told by the seller all subaru's do it?

I was skeptical, so i ask the question is there any truth to this?

I have a hill holder clutch. Not all of them have it.

You activate it by braking on a hill with the clutch in. (Handbrake off)

Any manual car will hold on a hill just using the clutch.

He's not on about using the clutch, he's on about with the clutch pedal to the floor.

Err no he's not.. He is talking about the clutch pedal being up towards the bite point.

All Wrx's are turbo charged and therefore have a hydraulic operated clutch fitted. The "Hill Holder" system is only suitable for cars that have a cable operated clutch, So this means that if you have any Turbo version of the Impreza/Legacy or Forester (Classic or Newage) then you can not have the "Hill Holder" option fitted.

All "Hill Holder" cars hold the brakes on after application if the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor. As you lift the clutch pedal off the floor towards the bite point of the clutch the brakes are released and the clutch takes over to move the car forward.

There is an easy test to see if you have this system fitted... Stop the vehicle on an incline with both the clutch and brake pedals depressed, then release the brake pedal & see what happens... If the cars rolls backward then it does not have the system fitted, if it stays put, then you should feel the brakes release when the clutch pedal is raised towards the clutch biting point.

Yup looks that way.....

He does however, technically have a hill holder.... It's called his clutch .

Would get expensive though if he uses it too much

Wow that got complicated...

It definately isn't just holding it on the hill as you would with any normal car, the revs would drop.. It's something different as when you lift he clutch a little the car pulls forward, you depress brake then lift brake off and lift clutch a little further approx half way and it holds the car without, revs rising or dropping..

Does it hold the car on idle with the clutch pedal fully in and brakes off?

1 - Stop on a hill with the footbrake
2 - Put it into first, keep the clutch in
3 - Release the footbrake

All the while, no handbrake. Does it stay there?

Nb:- You have to be facing uphill.

I had a MY99 Sport that had this. All I had to do was brake to a stop on a hill with the clutch fully depressed and then release the brake pedal. The car would not roll back even though the clutch was fully depressed and the brake pedal released. As soon as I started to release the clutch the 'hill holding brake' would release - so you had to be quick on the gas!
