Default Malfunction Indicator Lamp

Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on this afternoon and was wondering whether there was any self diagnosis I could do before goin to a main stealer? Is it just a case of connecting the green/black connectors and counting flashes etc? Failing that,is there anyone in Somerset with a fault code reader for a newage? Lol...

Thanks
