Default Oil light on for 5 sec after starting

This happens when the car hasn't been started for a week.(just use it on the weekends)
On a 2006 STI with 100,000 on the clock.
Is this normal - how long do you find your oil light stays on after starting?

Ive left mine for months before and it goes out instantly,i have had this on a couple of cars and it was a dodgy oil light switch both times.

Oil light should be off within a second of starting.

Seeing as how Subarus are so unforgiving of low oil pressure, I would advise that you hook the engine up to an oil pressure tester and verify you have adequate oil pressure.

It could be a dodgy oil switch as mentioned above or it could be a faulty oil pump or excessive bearing tolerances. The last two would require immediate fixing since they will cause extensive engine damage in short order.

As suggested check the pressure with a mechanical gauge, ideally in the OEM sensor location. I rarely see pump failures, but pickup failures are not unheard off...

If you're lucky enough to experience a crack before complete failure the symptom is oil light on too long at startup or occasional flicker at idle.

I know it's normal to stay on for a second or two after starting but 5 seconds seems quite long.
