Default toothed idler pulley blown!

Hi all,
Couple of days ago i had a bit of a disaster with my scooby,i was just pottering along doing no more than 20 mph when i heard a noise that sounded like gravel being thrown about under the car,it then started to shudder and gave a little back fire then cut out. After getting it towed back home i had a look around and found that the toothed idler pulley had basically disintagrated around the bearing and come off spitting the bearings out.The cam belt was still on but had slipped quite a bit knocking the timing out.Really pissed off as i was told by the previous owner that all belt and pulleys had been recently changed, but looking at the state of the other pulleys makes me think this was a load of bull! The pulley to the left of the cam wasnt even tight and when i took it off i noticed that the threads are gone!So guys do you think my engine is toast, gonna put the belt back on and do the timing and see what happens, but im not very optamistic. Its a phase 2 classic wagon.Cheers

I have read of a few lucky ones but they are the minority,if i remember rightly they can move 3 or 4 teeth without contact.

Looks like i'll be looking at new heads at least then.Really pissed off as i trusted the guy i got it off, seemed a really straight kinda guy. Will i have to get the heads for a 99-00 model or will the heads from an earlier model fit?

Got the belt on and timed up today and as i thought ive done the valves so gona get the engine out, take heads off and see what the damage is.Had it running so dont think theres too much damage, hopefully a new set of valves should fix things. What sort of money are we talking for new valves, springs etc.Just parts as i'll be doing the work meself.Cheers.

Gutted for you don't know about the price as never bought them but i would probably reuse the springs and hopefully not too many bent valves.
