Default engine

pick your brains please my mate has a p1 but has blown the engine (big ends)
what he would like to know is he can get hold of an engine with a closed deck block without heads will the p1 heads fit ok and are the internal crank rods etc the same size as p1 internals can he swap them strait over
thanks baz

I wouldnt want to replace an STI engine with anything thats not exactly the same, there are differences, pistons for one, the fact a P1 revs to 8200 and an early cdb engine only to 7k (there is a reason!), unless you fully rebuild the engine etc you may as well go for a rebuild and save a load of hassle with 2nd hand engines.

Any 2.0 block will work mate as long as he gets the right thickness head gaskets to suit as early block had slightly protruding pistons at TDC needing a thicker head gasket and later are the other way round but a engine builder will be required to work it out right to tell him which thickness is required to get the compression ratio right.

Yup the block will but the internals wont
Looks as though he wants a straight swap which I wouldnt want to count on lasting

I'd go with what Tony said in his first post and rebuild his current block with forged internals.

he is going for a full rebuild but thought cdb block may make it a stronger engine

Why are you discussing swapping internals from a blown engine, the crank, at least 1 rod are scrap, also the CDB will require a rear thrust conversion to fit the later crank.
Whatever block you fit will not make the bottom end any stronger, as in your failure.

may have worded this a bit wrong what he wants to do is maybe bore out to a 2.2 all internals whatever he decides to do will be brand new and uprated the only bits he will be useing off the old engine are the heads and the cams as he had the top end done about 2000 miles ago then bottem end went (told him to do full rebuild then)what he wants to know is is the cdb block a better block to work with
thanks

To bore to 2.2 means going from a standard 92.00mm bore up to 96.90mm - wont be anything left of the liners tbh.
Rebuild the original open deck/rear thrust block with steel/forged internals or do the same with the Closed deck/center thrust block if you intend to run decent power.
