Default Standard MY00 turbo power run results

Hello there. This is my first post on Scoobynet, although I've had my Impreza for about 6 months now and have been lurking on the forum, reading threads and buying stuff from people. So please be gentle!

Anyway, I've had my car, an MY00 classic turbo on Dave Walker's rolling road at Emerald in Norfolk to see what sort of health the engine is in. It's been well looked after by the previous owner, who covered around 165,000 miles in her. The total mileage at the moment is just over 196,000 and nearing 197,000. The only modification is a K&N panel filter and I wanted to make sure that it was running properly, since it's the first turbo'd petrol car I've had.

Here are the traces.


To me, they seem like pretty healthy numbers from a standard high-mileage car. A bit of a power gain but a loss in torque compared to book figures? From an internet search, the book figures should be 215bhp @ 5600rpm and 214ftlb @ 4000rpm. Boost seems steady at 12psi (0.8bar) and the lines aren't particularly smooth, probably because of the standard factory map?

I'm not planning on going mental with this car, nor any trackday use, but it's tempting to stick on the Samco Y-pipe, Japspeed centre section and Scorpion back box I've got knocking about and then consider an EcuTek remap in the future to smooth everything out and make it nicer to drive on the road.

That is excellent power gains for such a high mileage car ,sticking the mods that you have on should yield even more power as the std intercooler pipework is quite restrictive & adding the exhaust parts will allow the gases to escape quicker..
Ideally though a remap would make sure that everything is running as it should and will get the best out of the mods that you have fitted and should produce 270 -280 bhp without to much trouble.. Also not a necessity but if this is your chosen route a 3 port boost solenoid would not go a miss either..

Thanks for the comments. I was rather impressed by the numbers as well in all honesty! Will fitting the mods I have without an immediate remap cause any issues? Bearing in mind that I don't redline it everywhere and still just enjoy the boost rush. I've got some suspension work to do before I can play around with the engine though.

I've read about a 3-port boost solenoid, but what is it exactly, what does it do and do I need modify any wiring and/or pipework to fit one? I think my choices for a remap are limited to an EcuTek because of the standard ECU I use.

Picture of the car is below, when I first got it, just a bog-standard silver Impreza. It's really tidy considering the mileage. Never been on track and never will hopefully. Just a bit of cheap fast road fun.

Very clean, nicer than most lower mileage examples i have seen! I would save up for the remap, and all the other bits and bobs and then fit them all at once.

I had a 99 uk turbo wagon a few years ago and that had 135,000 miles on,and i bolted pretty much the same mods on as yourself as well as fully decatting the downpipe+ a K & N filter, and it never gave me any running issues whatsoever apart from the car felt noticeably faster.I was planning on having the car mapped like this+ 3 point ,but bought a vf 28 two weeks before the remap was due.
A 3 port boost solenoid gives more/better control of the boost that your car generates and is dead easy to wire up,but if you go down the ecutec remap route it will take a mapper minutes to wire in.

On my current 00 uk turbo wagon ,i fitted all the parts then when straight to having the existing map tweaked, which yielded more power than my previous car.

AE800 ECU (if yours is a AE802) + Decat + Dawes = Best value for money smiles.
