Default Knocking Noise?

Hi Everyone.
Just to set my mind at ease.....
Everytime I go over a bump, a knocking noise comes from the rear passenger side of the car.
Ive been told that its probable the rear shock thats gone. And now ive parked up, a small amount of oily stuff is coming from the same area. Ive checked my brake levels and their fine......
Is it the shock or is there something I might need to check.
When I drive the car on a flat even road....It drives like a dream.
Any advise.....?
Thanks
Gandy
