I can only tell you my experience.
I ran a "Bullet" fuel filter. It sat horizontally.
Every so often at WOT I was aware of a momentary glitch in the AFRs. This was only evident during mapping at Bruntingthorpe with lap top connected. After I started investigating I then saw there was also a glitch in fuel pressure. The car had an SPA Digital Fuel Pressure meter with high resolution. The glitch was momentary, a fraction of a second. I struggled over a three week period to find the cause of the problem, wiring, fuel lines were checked, fuel pump replaced, FRP replaced. Only thing not done was fuel filter so the O/E item was refitted.
Problem solved.
I concluded that the horizontal filter was gathering an air lock from the air bubbles in the fuel supply and a glug of air was passing down the fuel line every so often. I have stuck with the O/E fuel filter since and never had any repeat of the problem running 600 bhp. I see no need to change away from the O/E fuel filter but if you do, mount it vertically.
