do new age rear boxes fit earlier classics?

Yes they will but also remember like for like model, turbo/STI are swapable, but na modelas like the 2.0l sport etc don't transfer other than to same/similar models as the flange is welded on at a different angle.
If memory serves correctly, the hanger on the later model box can be extended to align for the classic, but it doesn't work the other way around. I seem to remember doing something like this on my first classic.

my turbos got a very loud stainless on it,it was on when bought,i get called out early hours as im a search+rescue coastguard,been using my audi instead so as to not wake up my neighbours,i got offered an ex display stainless for a new age turbo tonight+bought it without checking as price was right...lol,just hope its quieter than the one fitted to mine...ha-ha
