5 speed group N or 6 speed conversion
Hi as title i need a gearbox ive looked into getn a 6 speed conversion then i get the offer of a 5 speed 1st - 4th short shift helical cut group N box with a long 5th. My car is a 97 sti with walbro fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, hks mushroom filter, front mount intercooler, exedy single plate racing clutch, apexi fc (andy forrest mapped), Gt spec2 exhaust manifold, 3" turbo back exhaust system i dont know its power thats why ive listed mods, but i will be looking into putting more power through it in the future. The car is used for track days only its not for the road, do i go for the 5 speed on offer or do i go for the 6 speed conversion which would anyone on here go for? There is a price difference between the 2 but put that aside for now. jeem

find out the specs of the five speeds box, sounds like a PPG gearset which are only rated to 450 lbs/ft iirc.

Hi forgot to say its a possum gearset
Thats what i was thinking i was more on the side of the 6 speed but was after some opinions, buy once an ready for any further mods to the engine, i do want to get some big power eventually but defo dont want to be buying another gearbox if a 5 speed runs out of puff when ive got the power
Cheer min thats the sort of info am after. cheers abody, jeem

Several people including me have run TY754 5 speed boxes with over 400bhp - in my case 450bhp/380ftlb torque- without problems.
If you're still on the standard turbo with those mods, then you are miles away from needing a 6 speed, but as said above if you plan getting silly in future then 6 speed is the way.
