Default Please help oem fan has 3 wires new fan has 2 ??

As above I'm replacing my radiator and fans with new oem radiator and slimline fans but I've just noticed the oem fans have 3 wires on the plugs and the new slim fans only have 2 :-(

original fans are prob twin speed hence the three wires, you need to work out which is the low speed wire and use that one and the common.

Will it all work ok with just the 2 wires then?

Yes, one wire is your ground (odiously) and then the other two wires are + one will be the full 12v and the other will be less.

You could (in theory) join the two power wires together to give the same affect as low and high speed (not 100% sure on that though)

If you dont have a wiring diagram then really it depends how you want them to operate and whether your car has air con or not.
If your car does have aircon, which I suspect it does as you have two fans fitted, then its not straight forward. The fans are switched on by the ECU both as a function of water temp and also as a function of air con operation thats why there are three wires. One earth, one power feed from the relays to switch the fans on when the water temp rises to around 90 deg and the third wire which is a power feed from the relays to switch on the fans when the air con requires them. In this case you cannot connect the two power feeds together.
I would suggest you get a wiring diagram and a meter and wire it depending on whats fitted and how you want them to operate. If you are not sure how to work it out from the wiring diagram then I would suggest you leave it alone.

From memory tho the 3 wires on the plug are as follows, the black or brown wire at one end is the earth ( can be checked by doing a continuity check to the car body), the middle pin is the power feed switched as a function of air con and the other end pin is the power feed switched as a function of water temp.

Both the power feeds are 12v feeds, the fan speed difference is due to the different windings in the fan motor depending on which pin is powered.

Im pretty confident with electrics but I just basically want to know how I can wire it so it works the same as the oem fans and yes I do have aircon

I like you :-) lol so that works good then, I take it the fans are pulling the air rather than pushing

Basically you cant wire them like the oem fans as the after market fans are not two speed.

Can you not measure which + has 12v and the other the lesser volt ?

then,i would assume the full 12v would be for the function of the water temp and the lesser Volt would be for the function of the aircon ?

Edit,so,from what Arch is saying,if the fans are just 1 speed yeah,it woulndt matter then if both + wires were together as the ecu would trigger a feed to either + and as the fans will only spin at set speed, they will work

Its not a 12v feed and a lesser voltage feed. Both feeds are 12v, the speed difference is generated by the windings in the fan. The two feeds are fed from different relays and are switched differently from the ecu.

As Arch has just said (just dug out the workshop manual and had a look at the wiring diagrams), There are two 12v feeds and one ground, one 12v is linked to the car for lower temp, and the other for higher temp (high and low speed) there is also a 12v feed for the AC on the other plug (there are two plugs for AC equip cars)

There are more winds of copper around the fan motor for the higher speed, and less for the lower speed, but both take a 12 +ve feed from the battery (via a relay).

There are a couple of options in wiring this up, what I can think of anyway.

1. Wire in one fan that comes on at low speed (normal temps), and wire the other fan to come on with high speed (high temps), the second fan could also be joined together with the AC wire, which will allow that fan to come on when you turn the AC on.

2. Wire both fans to come on under normal temps (so they run pretty much all the time, unless the car gets too cold it will turn the fans off)

3. Wire in a new switch for you to control when what fan comes on (not recommended)
