Your dash lights come on too when you put your foot on the brake?.. Lol, I asume you mean your dash and side lights have stopped working but your brake lights still work, only idea I can think of off the top of my head is that the button used to switch maybe some neons? And when theyv been removed the ends havnt been made safe and you switching them on has blown the fuse ( short circuit, have you just bought the car? Or is it the first time youv pressed the button? ), other than that maybe the previous owner fitted a stealth button check your fuses mate lol.

Sounds like an earth fault to me. You'll need to remove the panel with the switch in it and trace the wiring, find the other end and see what it controls/where it is. It may be acting as an auxilliary earth to the lights etc.
And yes, check fuses.
I once had an Escort that when my foot was on the brake, the headlights came on, and even if you took the key RIGHT OUT OF the ignition, the engine kept running.
Turned out to be a poor earth on the rear lights.
