Question V1-2 WRX, More Power please!!

Hi all.
I have a '94 import WRX version 1-2 which is currently standard spec. I have gauges fitted and it's showing boost is currently only hitting 0.4bar.

I have been told my current ecu is fixed and cannot be remapped so what are my options to get more power out of it with out breaking the bank.

I have heard that an STI ecu can be fitted which is then mappable. My ecu is the four plug type.

Look foward to your reply

Cheers

You can try and get your hands on something like a PP (Polar Performance) chip for your ECU. With supported mods (Front mount, air filter, free-flowing exhaust) they're supposed to ramp the car up to the 300bhp area... this is the route i've taken. PP chips are getting rare now but there's someone on here selling a similar chip.

Alternatively, you can try to source a Power FC (Rare these days for the V2) or fork out for the likes of a Simtek ECU or Dastek Unichip daughterboard. Have a look at JGM's website for prices.

If I were you I'd concentrate more on why your ownly making 0.4 bar boost with your current ecu, unless there's something I don't know and that model is supposed to run that? Dan.

I believe from what I've read that the factory set it at 0.4bar. I've checked all pipes for leaks etc and everything is fine.

Should these sort of chips be avoided or is this like the Polar one you have?

You should be getting c. 0.8bar.

Is the Boost Control Solenoid plumbed in properly??
Check it with the diagram below:

If all looks well, then do a ECU reset and fault code check. Follow the instructions in the link below:

Under the heading 'Manually Reading ECU Codes (Classic Impreza only)'

0.8-9bar factory,
No early scoobs have a mappable ecu,
you will either need to have it chipped 270-300bhp max out of them with all the rite mods,
a full remap either have an esl fitted to your ecu,or apexi power fc is the next step or £500+ on a simtek
is yours a 4 or 5dr?
as the wagons use less boost.
cheapest/easy mods for you would be-
Decat down pipe £40-60 s/h
decat centre section £20-40 s/h
rear box £40+ s/h
walbro 255ltr fuel pump £60 new
chipped ecu £80+ s/h
fmic £200 new,
fuel reg £50+ new set at 3.bar
filter either panel or ind kit £20+ s/h

all these prices are what ive seen them go for on ebay and the forum
Do not fit a bailey dump valve!! lol,
have you checked your dump valve isnt leaking under boost? the std black type tend to leak.

That is on the drivers inner wind yeah? I will check it later and let you know

I have a 4dr. I do have a pipercross panel filter.

Would you hear the dumpvalve leaking on boost or can you tell by looking at it?

totally standard as far as i can tell. havent seen any extra valves around the turbo or piping.
How can you wind the boost back, is that via these bleed valves?

Yes, bolted to the turret. If you lift the bonnet with the engine running and just raise the revs a little, it should click constantly. If it does not, then spray some carb/brake cleaner through it until it does.

Good, leave the very capable air box on and don't be tempted to fit an IK

Is it the OE item or a VTA?

The small black OE ones are usually pretty good/reliable but the VTA aftermarket type vary wildly in there reliability.

The usual way is to loop the turbo nipple straight to the wastegate actuator which gives you spring pressure of 0.5bar. Which is probably where you have got the idea of 0.4bar being factory set.

So it clicks constantly just off idle? I will check it later mate

I will, unless I get a FMIC in which case i'll put an Apexi on.

Yes it's OE black one.

Yes if it is operating correctly. You can also connect the two green plugs (in the link i posted) and turn on the ignition, this puts all/most of the sensors/relays into test mode and allows the fans to be checked as well.

If you are going FMIC then the air box would become a moot point.

I would recommend, if you do, go for the ESL Daughter Board to get the most from it along with a total decat exhaust (you will not require any cats for MOT on your MY) and a few other bits and bobs.

You will of course have to get her running tip top A1 before you can start any modding work.

Good, sounds like you have picked up a pretty standard example.

It is on the turbo. Just follow the pipes back from the BCS.

well on the diagram the pipe off the solenoid labelled actuator is currently connected to where you are pointing, could this be the prob?

Oh yesh.
Slip that from the middle onto the top port of the BCS, then run one from the middle to the actuator

B11L SD it should be worth a few quid to someone. I had mine valued at 2K+ 3 years ago as my car then was A reg and i couldn't use it, then some nice lady in a Disco wrote me off so i kept it.

I did a valuation when i first got the car. They said they would offer me £850. But its the hassle of waiting for them to sell it and then having to transfer number plates etc... i am a little bit out of my depth when it comes to all that having never had a private plate before.

Easiest way is to put it on retention (£80 iirc) before you advertise it, DVLA will then re-issue you your year plate.
The buyer then pays all the fees to transfer it into their name or onto their vehicle.

its simple enough to do you just have to find the cash for retaining it which you pass on to the purchaser,
