no you have to strip the block down ie pistons out then you split the block in two, you cant get to the crank bolts untill you have split block in two. you really need a manual with all the specs and a very clean room for the rebuild. if your not 100% about doing it yourself i would leave it for good engine builder to do

Anyone have a rough idea how much it is to have the shell bearings done....i suppose its gonna be a fortune! Reason i ask is a lad in the village has a V plater 2000 turbo that is very tidy but bearings have gone. What would this be worth do you reckon?

Cheers mate...the lad wants 1600 and says that it has only just started to make a strange noise so he has garaged it and not used it to prevent further damage....i have stripped and rebuilt bike engines before but never done a full strip on a car, only things like camshafts etc so not sure what to do.
If the car has only just started to make a noise is it likely to only need shell bearings? or will it have done more damage?

Not worth spending that amount of money when you can buy one that runs for the same price. Imagine buying the car, rebuilding the engine and it knocking its head off again because you have made a mistake during the build... thats a lot of money to waste.

i'd say you'd be looking at least £500 in parts providing crank not scored.
personnally i'd uprate everything while engine is out and thats considerably more, i'm upto around £1500 just in parts so far and engine still on the stand.
if i were you i'd put the extra cash towards one thats in good working order or source a decent engine from somewhere.
