Default Catch can

Hi there,

i checked my catch can today and the clear pipe was dark looking and right to the top. So i emptied it, and watery stuff came out, is this right, also a lot of yoghurt type liquid, I know this would be the oil mixing with water.

Is this normal?

It's normal, that's what the catch tank suppose to collect ( oil vapour ). I even disconnected the hose from rocket cover and flush through with water ( using garden hose ) to clean the tank.

I sure do a lot of short trips, especially girlfriend, as i only use at weekend.
Why does this do this on short trips?

I was thinking about taking it off and giving it a good clean.

How much should I check if doing these short trips?

Short trips wil always get more moisture in the breathers as the engine isn't warm for long enough to burn it off as the engine warms it creates moisture in cold pipe's.
You will always see a short trip car rust the exhaust out alot faster also as the moisture in the exhaust doesn't get burned off like the breather system.
I'd just keep an eye on the can and drain accordingly mate and yes give it good clean out including pipe work.

Why did you think a catch tank was needed in the first place?

Disconnect it (at least for winter) and put the breather system back to std.

Well I was trying to get as much out of it as possible and someone had said about a catch can.
I'd like some more information on this please.

Also about exhaust. As I have a stainless exhaust system. Will this rust?

One more question. How long is a journey meant to be to burn off? The journeys we normally take is anything from 5 to 13 mile depending who we are seeing.
Surely this will burn off anything.
Is it worth the missis, once warmed up to give it some as she doesn't drive very fast and never uses turbo much.

As alcazar said it is wise to revert back to standard during the winter months especially on a short trip car.
5/13 miles isn't any where near enough miles to burn off all moisture mate as the oil has barely got up to temp to start giving it some in that time.
A trip of about 20/25 miles would just about suffice imho,on the exhaust rust as long as you have a decent quality system then you won't have a problem and i was mainly referring to standard mild steel exhausts.
In my opinion catch can's are more to stop the oil vapour from getting into the inlet system ie turbo inlet trunk and inlet manifold and in some very high performance cases aid crankcase gas build up due to alot more piston blow-by.

Looks like i'll be needing a long journey.

How can I revert back to standard? As someone has done it for me, and god knows how he did it.

Will it do any harm over time if left, or just keep an eye on it? and empty and clean it often.?

Also i have revolution exhaust system
