Default Blue smoke on start up. . .

Hi all.

I've got an my99 UK Turbo. It wasn't running right so I did an ecu check and replaced the O2 sensor and knock sensor. All faults were cleared after an ecu reset.

This morning however, when I started the car there was a lot of blue smoke. It only happens on start up though and not when driving normally or on WOT.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Ben

As above reckon it's most likely your seals leaking into the chamber while it's sitting there, then burning off on start up. Pricey job iirc.

My thoughts exactly....every problem is just another excuse for an upgrade!

It may be the valve guides rather than stem seals

Cheers guys.

Any idea on a rough price? I didn't pay a lot for the car so need to know if it's worth fixing.

Its an engine out job unfortunatly, so unless you handy with mechanics your looking at a lot of labour for what is a relatively cheap part in the engine to replace (I think when my engine was built new seals cost approx £60)

It's an awkward one tbh
Cost of parts isn't much but labour is a buggy
Engine out plus finding problem, top end rebuild. I would guess at about a grand

Get the parts mate and i will give you a hand rebuilding it, engine out job though.

Failing that try to source another engine and then you can strip it down and rebuild it in your own time using stronger parts etc.

Too far down south unfortunately
How many miles as it done btw, I would check turbo first just to make sure.AFAIK it is rare but I've had heads that have had worn exhaust guides.

It's done 73k.

I started it this morning and there was hardly any smoke, took it for a drive and it's fine.

When I got back I noticed and burning oil smell so popped the bonnet and there is oil dripping from the left hand corner of the intercooler.

I checked the oil this morning when cold and it's over-filled by a fair bit. Could this be causing it?

It could be caused by overfilling possibly. Oil getting in the intake via the breather, or a dodgy pcv valve?

Hi Ben

A few questions.
What is your oil consumption? I mean in terms of mileage per quantity.
Did this start all of a sudden?
Are there any noises occurring that you didn't have before?

Have you done a recent oil change, if Its overfilled that could account for it but can also knacker turbo seals. If It's only done 7ok shouldn't be stem seals or valve guides.
I would day turbo seals of it doesn't clear up caused by overfilling, evidence of oil in intercooler supports this

I've only for a few weeks so unsure of oil consumption. I have not put any oil in it since I've had it so can only assume it's been over-filled by the previous owner.

The car has always been a little smokey and honks of petrol fumes from the exhaust. I thought this was down to the O2 sensor playing up though?

No other weird noises.
