Block strength-wise prob not much in it. Unless you decide to go for BIIIG power, in which case a CDB is preferable (if the MY98 is indeed a CDB compared to a MY99's???).

Of course, the MY99/00 has a different head-IM stud hole arrangent, which could be a swinger (the MY99/00 STi heads can handle big power... Although, that said, the MY97/98 STi ones aren't exactly shabby in this regard).

Just wait for merlin24 to post up (he knows everything about the EJ motor and drivetrain)...

okay ! thanx!
I just want to do some easy mod like fuelpump, exhaust, sparkplugs and a remap to 95ron . We have 99ron (v-power) and 98 ron to in Sweden but they are not easy to find everywere .
Just want to run safe! Planing to run some trackdays here in Sweden in the summer.

I want to buy one sti in the next 2 weeks but i can´t choose between v4 or v5. the V5 is much more expensive than the v4 thats why I`m asking.
I had a GT before (wrx)MY00.

regards Dennis

You don't need to concern yourself about the block/heads until up to around 500+, so just get what you can comfortably afford.

Be aware though that the MY93-96 WRX heads limit to around 380 reliably, and the STi v.1/2 ones a bit more (I think) -- so defo don't get an early v.1/2 EJ20G block WITH its heads!

Make sure it is indeed either a STi EJ20K or EJ207 with the respective matching heads (as you intend... )

The MY98-00 have the nicer facelifted interior/dash/clocks as well...

okey .. well I didn´t plan to buy a early one . I want a 2door type r.
Seems that the EJ20K have not so good reputation in US when i did som google searching . But as usual in the us they say different things.

Anyway the gearbox is a bigger problem so I have plan to run max 320hp . Maybe the engine won´t brake....

We dont really say its a 1998 Impreza, we would go by the MY or model year, so even if the car was built in 1998 (like my type r was) its still an MY99 model.
You also have to remember that there were several changes between the MY98 and MY99 cars, one being that the MY99 have mappable ecu's, the 98's dont, the engine went from phase 1.5 to phase 2 and the gearboxes were stronger on the MY99's.

As a general rulle of thumb you should be okay at around 350/350 re the boxes. But of course usage/luck playes a bg part.

To that end, the later (younger) 6-bolt box in the MY99/00 should be a bit more reliable than the 4 -bolt MY97/98 one, all else being equal.

If you can afford it, get the latest car you can. A low miles MY00 Type R STi v.6 would be dapper.

Don´t really know if Im understanding everything ... 6bolt.4bolt ??

Anyway SVAimports in Dover have som v5 type r I´d like to buy but they are to expensive so I find one v4 from a private owner on pistonheads who sell for 3000£ less...

I would left this week if it wasn´t the stupid snow on your airports

Don't worry about it. The v.5/6 boxes are allegedly that bit 'stronger' than a v.4 one. But it's sort of a moot point if you intend to get your car mapped to 350 odd...

I can't believe no body didn't jump in on this discussion back when it was being posted. So much false information here that someone would know less about Subaru's after reading it.

The EJ20K isn't necessarily closed deck.

I have a V3 STi with an EJ20K and that isn't closed deck.

info here.
