Default Seeking error code advice

Hi guys
I'm having a strange little problem I was hoping someone here may be able to shed some light upon.....

A few weeks ago my engine light came on and a very helpful local member waved his magic wand over it and diagnosed ( Ecutek Data dash ) a misfire on No1 . The error was a one off and when cleared everything was fine. The car ( 02 UK bugeye no mods bar exhaust ) ran fine while the light was on and continued to run fine after the error was reset.

Everything was fine till last weekend when the light flashed 4 times then stayed on while I was doing 50-60mph in 5th. The following morning the light had gone then reappeared 40 mins later during very mild driving. The following morning the light was off again and has stayed off since.

So I had the magician wave has magic wand again even though no light was on as I wanted to make sure everything was ok. Two error codes came up....No1 misfire again and 20B1
also the fuel air ration was running high Norm 14 and under load up to 28
I was informed it should be a little lower and this could be a default setting.
Now the 20B1 code which I have researched a lot about has spurious origins depending on who you speak to. It could be an extra error confirming a misfire or an equivilant OBD code P0462 which some say relates to a fuel tank sensor reading out of spec or failing ( I have not run the fuel low )

Can anyone confirm this and explain why after lighting up, the engine light had gone back out on it's own without manual resetting. Is this common?.

As for the misfire...I was thinking lead/coil/plug starting to break down, would anyone agree with this and possibly suggest routes of diagnosis.
Can I check the resistance across the coil to see if it's breaking down?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Cheers
Taffy

misfire error could be something as simple as a loose spark plug

But does that explain why the engine light went out?
Is that normal?

if the plug loose, a misfire will be detected because it aint blasting correctly, also you said no mods bar exhaust, complete system or cat back, I know when I did my bug I ( headers & decat ) also had misfire No1, but was fitted a couple of days before the remap, after remap, all ok

as far as I no the ecu will put the lite out, did on mine, until it senses the fault again

Thanks for the replies guys , I'll try contacting Jolly green monster and the plugs were changed 5000 miles ago. The exhaust is a cat back not the whole system

Do you actually hear/feel the engine misfiring when it gave the faultcode? - If not, then i'd check for correct operation of the Neutral Position Switch

Not at all.it's running like a clock and I've not noticed any change at all.
What's the neutral position switch?

Cheers

As it's name suggests, it indicates to the ecu when the car is in neutral and is located on the passenger side of a 5 speed gearbox, or on the top, rear of a 6 speeder

It can easily be checked for correct operation with ecu diagnostics/datalogging.

It may not be your fault, but definately worth checking IMO

Thanks for that suggestion..I'll follow up on that

ETA I had assumed it to be the gear neutral indicator but as I'm not a wizz on electronics I had to check just so as not to look a fool later on...lol

The Denso ECU looks at fault codes and decides if they are going to destroy the engine or the environment...... then sits and thinks

If the ECU thinks things are terminal (see above) then it keeps the CEL light on permanently !

If the ECU thinks it's a transient thing (camshaft position sensor error for example) it puts the CEL light out after about 5 engine starts LOL

Ty
Have you had any more thoughts on this erratic code?
I've not had any more problems even after one session demonstrating my donut techniques to the local pensioners in the village and taking care of business in a virgin white empty car park...gotta love the snow.

I've stuck to Tesco momentum since and was wondering if my cavalier attitude to fuel choice before may have caused the codes to appear ?

Hope you are having a great crimbo

And once more....thanks so much for helping me out
