Question Speedo stopped then Engine light come on?

Are these things linked? i drove the car & noticed the speedo stopped then few mins later the engine light came on! i'm confused why? as the the oil/water temps ok & car was going alright as usual so wondering what the reason could be?? surely the engine light wouldn't go on for sticky speedo right?

if its anything like the prob i had with my classic then yes as my speedo cable broke and cel light came on and put car in safe mode, put on a new cable and it cured the problem after new cable and ecu reset but bieng yours is later model it might be a speed sensor of some sort.

yeah it will. my speedo link thingy snapped at the gear box end and the engine light came on. once it was fixed, light was out.

also check where the speedo wire goes into the clocks as it can pop out

If the speedo cable/drive is broken, then the ECU does not recieve a signal from the speed sensor, and therefor, as above, the CEL is shown and limp mode is engaged to protect the engine.

Replace cable, repair fault, and hey presto.

Absolutely bang on mate,as i have another one to change on monday morning(4th one in 6 weeks) ,but i think you will find that this only applies to classics from 1993 -1996,that have cable driven speedos,1997 onwards have electricl speedometers ,so no cable in the back of the clocks. and the op's car is a bugeye.

Might be worth checking the wiring to the speed sensor

Point taken.

Replace the word 'cable' with 'sensor' and you get the idea.

right, got up early this morning went to the car then started the bug-ger & the fans we're going even though it was cold.. i drove few meters down the road & the speedo is now working & the engine light turned off! i let the car warm up then parked up & all is ok now - totally baffed by this.. but i have noticed the speedo stick before this occasion & that went away after a couple of mins of driving, just got worried about the engine light this time. I guess my sensor is on the way out?

Thats saved you a few quid (for now anyway). Might be worth tracing and checking any wires/connections/sensors for security/damage. Be prepered for the future though.
