Default Upgrade advice pls..

I am looking to upgrade my 97 prodrive WR to eventually achieve about 300-320 bhp and i wondering the best way to go (HKS boost controller, VF35 turbo, Simtek etc...) ????

Also the car is boosting at 11psi but i believe the PPP should more like 13.5psi. Could it be the 95Ron fuel doing this as i was told by the previous owner to run the car on this rather than super ?? The haynes book says prodrive remapped the ECU to run on 95ron but is this true?

One more for fun. The previous owner also binned the OEM airbox and put a very cheap cone filter on . Is it worth changing this back to a standard unit with a ram air panel as fitted on the PPP ???

thanx

I would only use Vpower mate regardless of it being a UK car or Import. Also add some NF. Personally i would revert back to the standard air intake setup as it is more appropriate.

Start with brakes, your 2 pots suck your ecu isnt mappable so its going to have to be after market, you will need a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, uprated fuel pump, ported headers are advisable also, what you want to do with your 97 UK car wont be cheap, the simtek is 1200 quid mapped, a decent brake kit is 600+, the 440cc injectors you require are not that bad a price, a fmic is recommended over 300bhp so add 4-500 for that (excluding fitting though normally some cosmetics to the front bumper are required), and get the car health checked before going there, no good if the car has a tired engine and then trying to get more out of it, it will just go pop

As for all PPP'd cars, best not to change too much or anything really, so go back to the standard setup for now until you start your mods.

Cheers Aladdin. Will do.

Thanks for the sound advice Tony. Booking the car in for a service @ scoobyworks next month so i will see what they think of the engine and will get a walbro fitted as well. Any advice on what turbo or will a VF35 do the trick?

Still need to look @ turbo as the car is on the changeover year (TD05 to TD04).

Kyle.

If "300-320" is your target the optimal turbo choice is probably a hybridised TD04. VF35 is more a 340-350 window unit.

Still need to look @ turbo as the car is on the changeover year (TD05 to TD04).
Changeover year? Not sure what you mean by that. If it's a 1997 (or early 98) model year car it will have a front entry TD04 (and, as another easy idenfication aid, a single coilpack mounted on the upper centre of the inlet manifold. If it's a 96MY or earlier car it will have a right-angle entry TD05, and individual coil packs mounted on each spark plug.

Cheers all. single coil pack so TD04. I will look for a hybrid one. Anybody know the max safe boost from a standard TD04 unit out of interest?

The TD04 is a fun turbo to have. Spools so quick!

The starting point for all of these cars is a good free flowing exhaust system with proven results. Something like a Revolution exhaust with a 3" open neck downpipe followed by ported headers with matched uppipe. At that point you have done the ground work for any future modifications.
Your 97 car will require an aftermarket ECU to take care of any more significant modifications. Your TD04 turbo is probably capable of an easy 260-280 bhp and in extreme cases maybe into the 290s but for much beyond that you need a different turbo such as a VF28. This has the advantage of early spool but the ability to produce 30-40 bhp more than the TD04.
Yellow injectors will get you to 320 bhp plus maybe 330 odd but you will need a mappable ECU when you change the turbo.
It would make far more sense to do all the ground work first and get the best out of what you have before you go on to the turbo changing and ECU requirement.

Cheers all for the sound advice.

I have been to Hayward & Scott today and modified my back box from the sport i had and fitted a 2.5" new centre section. Apparently the CAT in the down pipe is rattling and will need replacing. Was looking at getting the up pipe and a down pipe with sports cat fitted by them in the new year........good idea or would a de-cat be better as i could get that done sooner but i fear it near play up the PPP ECU ?????????

Running on V Power now and though expensive...... what a difference in how smooth it runs... great advice
