Default gear box number 3 blows up after a week!

i am ever so slightly pi$$ed off, fitted what seemed to be a perfect box last Wednesday 1 week to the day later and it went bang.

i can get 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse if i really force it 3rd and 5th dont want to know at all. when it is in gear its ticking and rattling like mad, drained the oil tonight and a load of metal came out with it.

its a standard ty754vn1aa and i am running at about 280bhp, surly that should be ok.

what options do i have, is there a stronger box i can get that wont mean me getting a remap?

any advice would help me very much

Mark

i have a 2.5 2006 WRX gearbox for sale if thats any help. I think they are a strong box to be able to take the low down power of the 2.5.

my gearbox is at RCM and is perfect.

Not wanting to point the finger at you but if you are harsh with them they will cry enough quite soon.

Could just be bad luck.

Later 2006 5 speed boxes are stronger and would work well or maybe a 6 speed non dccd box ...

i don't drive them on the red line all the time, but like most impreza's it gets a work out from time to time.

so if i buy the box and matching diff will i need a remap? or any other 'add ons'

Just unlucky mate, you do have to be carfull with them though, I snatched mine out of 3rd without the clutch fully disengaged and destroyed 3rd gear, replaced box and been fine since. With 280bhp you shouldnt have a problem, its either how your driving or the box you bought was on its last legs.

i think you might want to talk to david at api engine as they do recon boxes and will take your box as your box should take 280bhp if in good shape in the first place

get reputable place to rebuild it for you then shouldn;t have any issues, assuiming its not your driving. mine blew at 260bhp/280ftlb, but i openly admit i was giving it death on the isle of mann at the time.

here it is looking rather sorry fo itself,, lol

All discussion has been of power but what torque is your car kicking out? AFAIK its torque that kills boxes.

My last UK T2000 was running 277bhp but 312lb/ft so it was a torquey ****.
