Eddy,
I've had my needle not making much sense a few times.
I think from the point of coming on you will have around 10 litres in reserve or there abouts.
I run mine as low as I can. I give myself a nice 10-15 miles from once the light comes on. Then fill up the car.
I managed to drive my car all the way from Castle Combe to junction 13 of the M25 once on a 1/4 of a tank.

You have a 60 litre tank and if you run it to the point of almost empty you can add 61.8 to 62 litres. I guess the extra is the filler neck and hose joining the tank.
The actual amount left when the fuel light comes on can vary quite a lot from car to car. I usually clock the point at which the fuel light comes on, add 30 miles and fill up at that mileage. This usually results in a fill of about 55 litres so I guess if you were brave you could add 60 miles and expect to add 60 litres and if you really want to be an anorak you can put a five litre petrol can in the back, add 60 miles from fuel light and see how many litres it takes. At least you won't be stranded because you have taken the precaution of taking additional fuel.
You can actually adjust the reading of the fuel guage and the fuel light warning point by playing about with the fuel flow and the pressed steel bracket bending it down. This is the bracket that carries the fuel pump and fuel guage assembly.

My STI Bug Wagon 60 ltr tank, fill to the brim will use about 46 ltrs before light comes on,cruise on the motorway at 80 off boost 31 mpg,not handing around 18 mpg, flat out 7 mpg so I am told! not bad for 320 horses

After filling to the brim my gauge continues to show a full tank for a fair number of miles before it starts dropping, like the first few litres used aren't registering because the float arm needs to drop down a bit before it starts to read. I think I may have bent the float arm when changing the fuel pump!

Eddy: Put five litres in a tin and run it to near empty or empty and then you will know exactly what the situation is. You can get to a point where it chugs on a roundabout or accellerating away from a stop and you know you are about out. If I ever get that low I just pull in to the next garage if I am in town, add a gallon and head for the nearest Shell. I should add this is a very rare occurence and a local Shell is half a mile from here.
As regards the guage not dropping from the first 50 or 75 miles, this is simply because the fuel level has to drop down the filler neck and then down the tank a bit before the float will actually start to drop. The float is totally submerged when the tank is full and will remain so until 5-10 litres minimum have been removed.
