Default Strange Problem with overheating Help

Hi i have a very strange problem with my 2001 bugeye wrx i had a head gasket done on it about 2 months ago now ever since iv had problems with overheating again but its strange how it over heats first of i replaced the thermosat as it was closed and would open i had a spare on which opened but it still had the same problem so i was told to drill some holes in the thero to let it run cooler dont no if this works but it seem to run loads better after this was done still overheats but takes along time to do so iv checked for air locks and all seems ok top and bottom hose are hot and heater is hot to but iv noticed when it starts to get hot temp gauge go's upto 3/4s then if i rev it it go's straight back down to half and as soon as i drive it go's down to was also the expan tank is filling up with water has any one got a idea what it can be

Sounds like the water pump failing. Some have plastic impellers, which can deform and not work well. Others have the impeller lose it's grip on the shaft, so the shaft turns, but the impeller doesn't, except at higher revs.

I'd get it checked before the h/g go again
