Default ECU or PPP?

Hi,

I've got a standard 2004 WRX Impreza.

I'm wondering whether I should go for an ECU remap over the PPP package as it seems to be cheaper. Does anyone agree and what else should I look out for?

Also, does anyone know what an ECU remap or PPP upgrade will do to the MPG? The figures for my standard one say:

Fuel consumption (urban) 22.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 39.8 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 30.7 mpg

Are these likely to drop a lot?

Thanks
BB

Go for either EcuTek or Open Source remap and sensible aftermarket mods to see c.280bhp. Forget PPP because it's a grossly overpriced one size fit all package.

You drive an Impreza. If you're worried about fuel consumption you're driving the wrong car.

Thanks, I'll look at those - your comments about PPP seem to be similar to what else I've read so I think you're right I should give that a miss.

re fuel consumption, it's something I have to take into account as whilst I love my scooby I simply can't afford it if my fuel prices double! I'm a newbie to subaru's and don't have any technical knowledge, so I'm just hoping someone can help me out with some general advice on it.

Thanks

Thanks, so basically if I get it mapped my consumption will drop a lot (I won't be doing any track driving, this is purely a daily road car that happens to make me smile )?

The best advice you could have is forget mpg.

Once you've properly taken that on board and it really has sunk in.....,move on and get those mods and remap done. If you use it as a weekend only car then mpg doesn't matter a toss becuase during the week you could drive any old diesel snotbox to and from work everyday to save money on fuel.

If it's going to be your daily driver it could get expensive!!

ETA: More power does nothing more than encourage you to plant your foot into the carpet much further and harder which = LESS MPG!!

I think there is a pattern emerging here!!

If you can get the ppp used then it can be a cost effective update, but a custom map may give more power and slightly better fuel consumption, When I had my wrx I collected all the ppp parts and a tactrix cable, was lucky to get ppp map for free from someone on here, so ended up with the full pack for about £250, all you need is intercooler hose, centre decat, backbox and the ecu tune, does make a good difference, If you do go for custom map though add a decat uppipe and used sti ppp downpipe as well then you should get about 280bhp

Mess about with your ECU at your peril. If you don't know what you're doing it can be detrimental to the health of your car. If your laptop disconnects while you're flashing that's your ECU bricked. The only way to recover it is with a bench flash.

More importantly, the urge and temptation to mess with the mapping on your ECU can be very strong and may lead to unpleasant results culminating in a trip to an engine builder and real tuner!!

If you don't know what you're doing leave well alone!!

I've come across many that think they know what they're doing when actually they don't!!

Is that slightly better than the ppp or slightly better than what I have now?

I don't, and certainly wouldn't contemplate doing anything like this myself!

Even the lighbulbs are changed by the missus in my household!

Glad to hear it.

PPP is nothing special at all. A full custom remap coupled with appropriate mods is far superior to PPP when done by a tuner that knows exactly what they are doing.
